When you did the Kindle-Prime Promo, did you set the email to deliver the prime the day after your prime expires or the same day?

Same day, since my Prime expires on 30 Nov. If I set it for the day after (Cyber Monday), I might be without Prime for several hours waiting for that email; possibly missing a chance at some hot CM deal.

edit: see post 894 for reason

But it's a moot point. I bought a Fire Phone and Amazon has already added that membership to the end of my current term. IOW, no matter when you activate it, it'll always be added to the end of your current term. I didn't know this at the time; otherwise, I would've had it delivered that day.

Bottom line - additional Prime memberships are always added to the end of your current term.
I had set mine for the day after like the link said.

I called Amazon to see if they could change it but they can't without screwing up the promotions. Oh well.

A post by Clark Kromenaker on this page says

Note what's in bold above. He only said it worked for the "Kindle Fire," so you can't be sure it'll return the device id for the Fire 6.

On a Windows PC:
You'd need the Android SDK (Software Development Kit), which needs the Java Platform (JDK) if your PC doesn't already have it (you'll get a popup upon first opening the SDK if you need to install the JDK).

This page leads you through things.

Jumping ahead to preview your goal, scroll down that page to the screenshot of the cmd.exe black window, and you see the results of the "adb devices": a device id (presumably) with most of it blocked out in red.

A caution is that he calls it the "serial number" just below that cmd.exe black window.

Here's another page from Amazon detailing the instructions, including using Mac OS X. It also refers to the "adb devices" return as a "serial number." You can check it against the serial number displayed in the Fire 6's Settings, and hopefully it'll be different.
I was able to get the valid android device for my old Nook HD that was used to buy the apps but even though it was accepted on the pages I tried it appears it's impossible to download paid app Apks to a laptop. Without another android device it's impossible to get them.

I love my Fire but I just find myself more than a little frustrated about the lack of decent apps so long term it's going to be an issue. I bought the Fire for two reasons, text to speech and Calibre Companion. I got the 16GB but even so I'm very reluctant to load tons of apps and for Calibre Companion I've now got a process that sends the metadata with an empty file so I'm not using up the storage with all my books. I only have 6 Kindle books downloaded anyway.

Without the paid apps I had on my Nook the Fire as it stands will do what I bought it for but there's no way the ecosystem of the Fires is good enough to be a proper tablet. The apps just don't exist on the Amazon App Store so I doubt I'd actually buy another one.

And I'm still contemplating another android tablet with expandable storage.

I stand corrected. You can't add a gift membership until your current one expires. They won't let you use them to extend memberships. Fire Phone Prime memberships can be used to extend memberships, but not gift Prime memberships. Go figure.

Now to make matters worse. This gift membership would've been used today. Then when I got my Fire Phone on Monday, I would've applied that Prime to the end of the gift Prime; thereby giving me two years. But not to be. Instead, Amazon applied the phone Prime to my account two days ago and now the gift Prime can't be added until a year from now.

But I didn't know any of this until after the fact. When I was redeeming the gift Prime, it recognized that I already had an active membership and gave me a gift card for the value of the Prime membership instead. Not a problem under normal circumstances, but this was a promotional offer and they subtracted the $18 promo from the full value ($99). That meant I no longer had a discounted Prime membership available. After a lengthy phone call to get things reversed, the best they could do was to issue me a credit for the $18 and leave the $81 gift card in place.

That Fire Phone Prime really screwed things up. I don't even have the phone yet. The CS rep kept telling me that I had already redeemed the Prime offer and I kept telling him that there were two different Prime offers involved. It wasn't sinking in.

Prime has some very strict and contradictory rules.

That's strange, considering this how-to blog post on using APK Downloader is very recent (November 25, 2014), and there are other similar guides claiming the same success, like this one.

I have to assume you no longer have the Nook HD, as that could be used as your app-download-and-transfer device since the Nook HD should have the Google Play Store.

Google won't let you download apps that are incompatible with the device. But since the Nook HD was the original purchasing device and downloader of the app you tried, then the only reason it shouldn't download would be if the app moved on and no longer supports the Nook HD's Android version. It's easy enough to try a second app, if you haven't already. Otherwise, I don't know what could be happening unless the device ID is not correct, but you already stated that it's valid (how did you determine that?). Note that the device ID must match Google's current view of the device ID and Google account pair, so if your Nook HD has moved along to some other owner with a different Google account, Google naturally won't allow the download using your Google account.

Another option (other than my original suggestion of using adb to get the device ID) is to buy a cheap Android cell phone for use as a media player (depending, of course, on whether it would be something you would want). That option is discussed here, and approximately starting here, and also here.

No I sold my Nook HD to a freind for £80 back in March. She emailed me the android ID with a screen shot of the Device ID app results so i'd know the ID was correct.

I had no issues downloading my free apps just not the paid one's.

The very cheapest I could get an Android cell phone would be £35 thats the LG 30. It has a three inch screen, my eyes are too old now to handle that small a size. I use my iphone and ipads for music and we have three ipad classics in the house.

After a bit of deliberation this morning I've bought the Asus Memo Pad 7 for £79, its on offer this weeked reduced from £120. It comes with 16GB but it will take an SD Card up to 64GB. Its a proper android tablet. I'll probably use this one for Calibre Companion and keep the Fire for the text to speech and Audible. Plus I can get three years insurance on it free. So all in it seemed a better deal than paying for a cheap phone i'll never use. I've paid just under £10 for a case and screen protector as well.

Ah, that's the problem. The Nook (and its device ID) is not associated with your Google account.

Glad you solved your app problem, albeit at a cost. When you said you were "miserable" about it in an earlier post, I understood the feeling quite well, having been in similar situations. Hope you enjoy your forced entry back into the Android world.

I've always been a stanch Apple girl and I struggled with the Nook HD even though I had Google Play. Although now I've had an ipad mini for a while I've begun to realise that maybe a small Android table along side the full size ipad is the way to go, with maybe a small Fire as my dedicated Amazon device so it will be interesting to see how I get on with mutiple tablets.
