How do you figure on those dates? Do you set the length of time between upgrades? At my office they have a set policy that all computer equipment will be upgraded once every four years. So the office has all the hardware on a rotation so not everything is upgraded all at once, once every few months something is being replaced but if its four years old its time to replace it. My old stand by paper white is a little over two years and I am thinking of getting a second backup, however I am not sure what I want to do at this point. Its still going but it has issues now and then.

For me, it's more of a money thing - I won't start my graduate job until 2015 so I won't be able to justify the outlay of money until then. Plus, I've only had the PW2 for a month, and I tend to like to only have one dedicated reader at a time (I occasionally read on my phone). So I figure I'll want to get at least a year's worth of use out of it.

I think other would also have been a good option. There is the H2O and the T68 as two other options as well.

I am upgrading because of the resolution and buttons, too. Double storage capacity is a plus since it would make no sense to upgrade to another PW2. I will finally break down and sell my PW1 and Kindle Touch on eBay and keep the PW 2 as a spare..

Question: did anyone who ordered the Voyage buy the protection plan? $199 is a lot of money, but $49 to protect it (25% of the purchase price!) seems crazy. Also I am not impressed by the new covers - why addbu
K if the object is to make it light. Anyone agree? Anyone buy the screen protector?

Didn't help it. I did several reboots and also did a complete factory reset. I don't store many books on it anymore, just a handful. Still the same slow.
Battery is also going down really fast now.

All of that sounds like a book (or books) stuck indexing...have you checked for that?

Nothing stuck, that would have been the first thing I checked. I tried everything I know how to do. It all went downhill with that update and that cloud mess.

The problem with Cloud Collections is that every time you make a collection change or add a new book to your kindle the kindle is trying to sync with the Cloud, it's even worse if you use whispersync.

The protection plan isn't yet available on the UK site but I will buy it, when it turns up, I've been told it will once the Voyage ships. It's peace of mind money for the extra few years.

I'm keeping the cost and weight down by buying the Belkin cover which weighs less than the official Origami cover. Third party cases may weigh even less.

Some people treat their readers roughly. I've never broken any device, but you get people on this forum who've broken numerous Kindles. For such people, the extended warranty is probably good value for money. If you look after your readers, it's completely unnecessary.

Yes, I plan to upgrade from my trusty and still fully functional K3! I've been waiting months for the PW2014 and the Voyage is it. It is a bit pricier than I expected though.

And if for some reason I don't care for the Voyage, the upgraded storage of the PW2 should make that an attractive alternative.

Edit: one question... will the K3 charger work with the new Voyage? Same micro-USB connector?

The specs don't say specifically that it's a micro usb, and none of the pictures on their webpage don't show the port, but Engadget claims that it's micro-usb.

....and micro-usb is micro-usb, as long as the charger puts out sufficient amperage. A 1 amp charger is probably sufficient. A higher amperage will not harm the device, it just means that the charger COULD put out more than the device is pulling. Less would mean that it can't keep up with the demand of the device. As for voltage, that's constant across all USB chargers as the standard defines it.

That said, cheap generic chargers can be dangerous as they don't have sufficient isolation and can cause fires or shocks, not to mention non-constant output that can damage your devices, so avoid super cheap generic chargers.

When I preordered mine, the list of things they tried to upsell you included their usual micro-usb charger so it would seem clear that they have not changed it for this gen.

Realistically speaking, I would not expect anyone other than apple to not use micro-usb at least until the usb 3.1 type c stuff becomes available.
