20GB and $10/GB sound incredibly bad.... I didn't realise that kind of thing existed these days, at least outside of extremely rural areas.

There's been a lot of talk about it in Canada, and it's pretty obvious as to why: the companies who want to implement these fees are cable providers and telephone companies that own television stations. So they are doing their best to protect those interests from the onslaught of online competitors. Coincidentally, they are also offering online video services that complement their internet services, for an extra fee.

Unfortunately, you can't avoid this stuff by going through an independent ISP because those cable and telephone companies also own the infrastructure that the independent ISPs depend upon to deliver their services.

We have the same ownership structure here, but thankfully no such fees. As far as I can recall I've had an unlimited connection for the past twelve years and I'd find it very hard indeed to acclimatise to anything else.

Kinda hard to stream from the Cloud with harsh restrictions like these.

There's a major conflict of interest going on here. What needs to happen is to break these companies up. If they provide internet service, then they can't provide content. If they provide content, then they can't provide internet service.

The caps are somewhat higher in Canada. It is rather easy to chew through even a hundred GB/month if you're streaming video, download software, and other high bandwidth activities. That's roughly 3 hours of viewing per day. That limit would be easy for a family to bump into if they replaced their TV with video streaming.

Giggle. Do you really think that the people who built these media empires are going to accept that? They didn't even like the government telling them that they had to charge bulk rates to independent ISPs so that a competitive marketplace can exist.

Of course they won't. That's why the government needs to step in and bust 'em up.

Ouch. Move to Nova Scotia. Eastlink only has caps on the 40mbit and higher connections - 5 & 20mbit are nice and capless. [though expensive - $52+tax for the 5mbit and $64+tax for the 20mbit]

I don't think I ever said that dropbox was streaming. My point still stands what happens when a Swede visits the UK with their device which doesnt work. They can just copy the stuff on to their sd.. oh wait no they can't...

It is indeed possible, although I find it rather improbable.
Perhaps 50 million people will rush out to by a Windows tablet once it is available and offers them all the complexity they want, but then again perhaps not.
There are more people in the world who want to do simple things than want to do complicated ones.
There will always been demand for cars with a manual gearbox, but most Americans buy automatics, even though they are less efficient, because they are simpler to drive.

Of course the device works in the UK with net but it will be rather expensive.

So what you do is you make sure all the files in Dropbox that you need also are saved locally (the same for Evernote).

We pay $55 a month for "High Speed Internet" the speed is only Mbps in perfect conditions, the ISP is a local internet provider. since we live about 45 Minutes away from the nearest City that has Shaw and Telus, and they have recently strung up Fibre Optic cables to here, so we're hoping that will mean we can get Telus internet. With Telus we could get 25Mbps and 500GB cap for the same price .

The website even says "State of the art modem internet technology which doesn't make sense. It's like the stone age of internet.
