You have no idea how I happened to end up with - only one, the first, was bought by me - the 3 Sony's I do use, but I did not get any by rushing like a headless chicken when any came out- and I never buy any new product until bugs are sorted, so I certainly would never hop on whatever line you mention!
I think the nearest I ever came was having to cycle 3 miles on my son's 10th to get him the latest Potter - but that was around 9.00 a.m.as I slept in !

I think your thoughts echo the sentiments of many. Most of the time when it comes to electronics it is best to wait until all the bugs are worked out. Sometimes manufacturers are in such a rush to bring their product to market that they overlook flaws that normally would be identified during proper testing.

Case in point. My wife and son were among those who waited in line for nearly 8 hours for the original Xbox 360. The thing got the red rings of death twice in the first year and almost every year thereafter. Microsoft replaced it four times in three years. Good thing I bought and re-bought (is this a word?) the extended warranty. The fifth unit seems to be OK but it took three years to get there.

The original Xbox 360 was plagued by overheating problems. In electronics heat means basically two things, wasted energy and early component failure.

Like computers, the Xbox 360 will accumulate dust which leads to overheating and needs to be cleaned on a regular basis. However, the main source of the Xbox 360's overheating problem was not due to dust. As the console heats up, the motherboard flexes due to heat. While this is a normal process, the weakened solder around the GPU breaks, allowing the flexing action to force the GPU chip out of contact with the motherboard. The fix ended up being a simple heatsink which should have been installed in the first place.


The iPad3 is running a little hot as reported by Consumer Reports. For the casual user this probably won't be an issue. However, if you run graphic and CPU intensive Apps this could translate into problems, especially during prolonged use. Hopefully those iPad3 owners who spent $500 or more for the latest and greatest won't experience the same agony as the original Xbox 360 owners. Only time will tell.

(ok, I know that it's not as nice as that 19" screen, but my kitchen is also not as nice as the one in the pictures)

I'm happy I could actually get one on launch day, especially with 3 million being sold. I was tempted to get the iPad 2, but it took months to be in stock and by the time it was I had decided to stick with the original one. Glad Apple made an attempt to actually get enough out there for people that wanted them.

The heat issue seems no big deal to me, but time will tell. I ran one of the high end games for an hour and felt the heat, but it wasn't too bad and the aluminum back dissipated it quickly once I exited out. I'm definitely not putting a back cover on though as that would hold that heat in. My netbook runs much hotter and its lasted 4 years so hopefully Apple has designed this to handle the 116 degrees the chip puts out.

I do use my current iPad (iPad 2) as a kitchen computer. I use it for recipes and to watch tv shows while cooking. I'd love a device with a larger screen in the kitchen, though, and touch input isn't super practical when cooking, I find. I'm kind of tempted to get a mac mini, that way I can hook it up to the tv to use as an entertainment centre, and I can use it as a regular computer hooked up to a screen in my kitchen or office as well. I'll probably wait for the new models to be released before deciding.

Oooohhh man! I want it sooo bad.

I have SO many recipe apps/websites that I use. And for shopping! Watching TV! Entertaining! I want one!

But my husband doesn't build computers and told me point blank it wasn't happening. I don't know any teenagers so I can't have one of them build it for me.

So my (current) options are either an iPad or a touchscreen all in one computer. I have to admit to being a bit particular about aesthetics...so the one I like visually the most is the Sony L Series. Which starts at $999.

That's before customization!!!

So I'm looking at the iPad again. And realizing that I really don't need a kitchen computer. But in comparison...the iPad isn't very expensive. In comparison.

It's been a while since you wrote this so I'm not sure if you solved this or not, but if you didn't you might like this: http://www.woodforddesign.com/Home.html. The FridgePad looks like the easiest solution for the kitchen, and it's actually the one that I've seen on a gadget website.

Hate? Why, is it heavy, does it overheat? I was tempted to upgrade my iPad2, but I've decided to hold onto it until the next iPad iteration.
