Uhm, this is silly. Maybe nobody has complained yet because nobody has informed the proper copyright holders yet. Maybe most people here care more about Bookeen staying alive than them complying to the law and respecting copyright laws.

While it is obviously copyright infringement and 2000 developers going to sue me, it is still the proprietary product until I (voluntarily or by court's decision) release it under open-source license.

I already mentioned in this thread that the FSF Europe got the complaint, but they're too busy at the moment to process it.

So? I repeat Harry's statement:

Copying firmware from a device that you don't own and installing on another machine is no different to pirating any other software.

dottedmag, you are talking about proprietary or apparently proprietary firmware. Harry talks about firmware in general. If a company is not as sneaky as you describe it, and fully acknowledges GPL, then I can do with the firmware what I want as long as I respect GPL. And this I do, even if I copy it from a device that I don't own and install it on another machine. I don't like general accusations calling me a pirate.

Not that I care, because I don't want Bookeen to get into trouble, but has gpl-violations also been contacted? They tend to do a better job in following copyright inquiries.

I've seen in gpl-violations.org mailing list that many requests were re-routed to FSF Europe, so it was just cutting the corner. Anyway, another mail won't hurt

Ah, absolutely agree then! Sorry for confusion.

No, it's different beast. However there are many devices with the same hardware as Hanlin V3, but with different firmware: http://openinkpot.org/wiki/HanlinV3, you may want to try one.

That is not true. Just email them and ask for the 558 firmware and they will send it to you.

Maybe we should put in the Wiki here in the matrix with the different readers the information if they violate the GPL or not. I feel bad that this forum in some way make people buy pirated things like the Cybook Gen3.

They will indeed - but do you have a licence to run it if you haven't bought a CyBook? I could make a copy of my Windows XP CD and give it to you. That's fine - you're only breaching copyright if you run the software.

You can only violate the license if Bookeen tell you what it is. If they don't send one with the firmware, then there is no license to violate.

The fact that the Mobi Reader is copyrighted code is stated in the "About" box.

Feel free to use info in our wiki to do it, and do not hesitate to ask if something is missing. However, I'd like to avoid "pirated" word, as it was spread by the BigCorps - better say, "do not comply with open-source licenses for software in use", or something like this, but less cumbersone
