I just noticed this post. I have four things to say.

1) Beautiful stories, shel/chris, astra and jswolf

2) astra, for some reason I had pegged you at half the number

3) I have met some of my closest friends online- many, many friends (I already had a husband by the time I got the internet.... we've been married 15 years.

4) I never would have met my husband online anyway. I don't think there's a single common website we like. His online tastes are extremely different from mine. He doesn't do any types of chats or forums. He used to visit godlike productions forum, but he just lurked.

Oh, I guess I have 5 things to say.... 5) I had to look up "IRC" after everyone kept mentioning. I was trying to guess "In Real Closeness," "If Roses Climb," "I'm Really Cool" ... I won't bore you with the rest, but suffice to say, I was way off.

Darn! I was going to let it slide, figuring "IRC" was just one of those things I would never know about, but now (thanks to you GraceKrispy!) I am going to have to look it up!

After Googling: I guess we're talking "Internet Relay Chat", not "International Rescue Committee"?? Could almost be either!

It was out there with DOS I think. I learned about it in Windows 3.11, still no client, only text based in a telnet session

Usually on other forums it a very popular.
Ie: on TL (Teamliquid, games related forums) it's used to make comments on live matches, like Starcraft, League of Legends, Dota (W3 mod), etc.
