What does that mean, mine not yours? Are you reading it in Tagalog? Mandarin? Some other language. Oh, and mine is better. English is closer to French than Asian languages. We share the same alphabet

What does it matter? I thought it was sweltering year-round in the Philippines. Plus, I live in California. The weather is nice year around, except for a few cold and rainy days during the winter. Unless you are talking about summer vacation; I'm not in school anymore, so I don't get summer vacations.

So what does it mean to be really cold in the Philippines? 33 degrees Celsius. When visited my cousins would be shivering when it was 24 degrees celsius, which i thought was perfect.

Thanks for the welcome. Very few of the world's really great writers made fortunes while they were alive... same with painters and musicians. Many had to rely on the patronage of the wealthy just to survive... didn't stop them though.

I doubt very much that money is the motivation for true creativity.

Your view aligns very nicely with what corporate giants like Harper Collins, Sony and EMI would like us all to believe, because it suits them for us to feel for the struggling artist.

However the real wealth goes to big companies and only a small cut to the authors & creators of nearly all art forms.

Well there is a shift in the balance coming and faster than most know how to control, but attempt to control it they will. You see, their revenue stream is the motivation not the creative process.

Speak to any creator about the ridiculous prices charged their work and they will tell you they'd love for it to be cheaper but the publishers have the monopoly via the organs of law to control the price. In the UK the Net Book Agreement, a fixed Book Price Agreement between publishers and booksellers which set the prices at which books were to be sold to the public was an absolute scandal. All done in the name of creativity.

“You may fool all the people some of the time, you can even fool some of the people all of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all the time"

Welcome to mobileread Groucho54. I'll probably say something about your post later today (although you probably won't hear it all the way in cyprus. But i do speak loud.) Well, I know it's almost noon in Cyprus, but where I am its close to 2am, so I'm gonna get to sleep.

And 28 degrees Celsius is cold for you wyndslash. Ha! Ha! Ha! The year round fine temperature in cali is the temperature that you consider cold! Anyways, I'll chat with you later.

Good day all. And remember. Leprechauns are people too. Or something like that.

The suggestion there is that all creativity that is commercially-driven (I did it to make a living) isn't "true" creativity, and is somehow diminished against "true" creativity.

My response to that is: So what? If commercially-sponsored creativity is enjoyed by others, I don't see that it needs any other criteria to justify its existence. Especially as there's plenty of non-commercially-sponsored creativity that, "true" or not, is still c**p.

The implication that money "taints" creativity, or anything else, for that matter, isn't an opinion shared by all. Money is simply another incentive to create, or to do anything, and just as valid as concepts like "recognition" and "philanthropy." It's not evil... it's practical.

As corollary, the implication that avoiding money somehow makes something "legitimate," is also an opinion not shared by all.

When people write in order to make money they make creative decisions based on how it will impact their profits. No more 10 page descriptions of kitten killing because it might put people off buying. They would also start writing what they think people will want to buy rather than what they really want to write.

I've seen this in music as well. Bands get lucky and sell enough records to give up their day-jobs. After that their music changes to attract more buyers. It's no longer a hobby so they have to make decisions based on profitability and chase mass market acceptability.

They still have the option of deciding "the hell with making money" and just do what they want. The fact that they do what they believe will help them sell their works work just proves the point -- most artists, writers, musicians, etc do hope for monetary rewards and are not just in it for the pure joy of creation --- at least when they have an actual chance to cash in. Nothing wrong with that, my guess is that being a proud but starving artist gets old pretty quickly.
