B&N already has the Nook, so I don't know if they're interested in picking up the DR series as well.
I think luqmaninbmore was thinking that B&N could pick up the wireless charges to keep us all buying eBooks from them..

There is probably a tangled mess of contracts and agreements involved.. think of it like this.. your co-worker dies.. and you want to take over their cell phone contract.. but your only association with them was that you used to work together.. you might somehow be able to do it eventually but it sure wouldn't be easy..

No, i was just talking of why B&N doesn't pay for 3G connectivity so that current iRex owners could still use B&N wirelessly.

Agreed. I think the only practical way it would work is if B&N bought iRex. That's why I assumed that's what the question was about in the first place.

Ok, that works to a point. I can download the book and I can read it on my laptop. But, when I copy it to my DR it fails to open:

Code:
The loaned document cannot
be opened because the license
has expired or is not valid.
I checked the book properties and it's still good for a couple of weeks and says it can be read on any device. So, I suspect there is something amiss with my DR setup regarding the Adobe activation (although the setup says that activation was successful).

Anyone have a clue as what to do?

I downloaded another book and it worked fine, so maybe it's something particular to the one book that doesn't work (be it the source, or something I did). I also tried a few of the ADE sample books and they all worked.

So, that's it? We buy a device and it stops working a few months later? With no notice from iRex on the plan? Why even bother continuing development for it?

Mine also has a burst capsule on the screen - VERY distracting, but their ticket system is down. GRRRRR.

Encouraged by the people on this forum I had dropped my habitual skepticism towards consumer electronics companies and spent a contented few months with my DR800. Now it seems that what the naysayers about IREX were saying might have been right all along - good product, shit company, (I do acknowledge the input from IREX folks on this forum, which has been invaluable - but that's probably down to them as individuals not down to IREX company values, culture and organisation).

The company formerly known as IREX seems to be doing nothing to mitigate that view - but then, they are not a consumer electronics company any more are they, so that's alright then!

I've actually started a process to recover my 400.00 purchase on the DR800SG as the 3G connection no longer operates and the new parent company is not going to stop forward to work with their inherited customer base.

I cannot reactivate my 3G connection for anything, I have signal but it just doesn't work.
Sadly I will be leaving the IREX product for the Kindle DX....

As far as I know, the only thing which stopped working was the 3G access. But that's not surprising considering the company that was paying for the ongoing access went bankrupt.

Personally, I'm more concerned with repair work than the 3G, which I never really used anyway. So far everything else on mine is working just as before. I'll have to keep my fingers crossed that I don't end up needing to find out how the repair service will work.

There isn't a repair services any longer. I tried to contact them (about the big black spot on mine) and all routes of doing so have been cut.

The old company shut off their support site during the bankruptcy. It's still uncertain whether the new company will offer repairs at a cost. They said they'll handle DR1000 repairs on a case by case basis, but that parts were limited. They haven't mentioned yet if they are going to be able to offer any service for DR800s, that I've seen.

Hi,

I wonder why no one works on hacking 3G module so we can put our own sim cards.
Is there a legal problem ?!

I own a great many orphaned consumer products. Therefore, my recommendation is to buy a used one from whatever sources you trust. I love my DR800SG too much to sell it right now. For me, it was/is the perfect sized reader, and at least on epub format books, it makes reading a pleasurable experience. I simply forget that I am holding a reader in my hand, and the barrier between the written word and my mind's interpretation of this symbolic representation just seems to disappear.

what does disturb is the fact that those "great" guys are suddenly nowhere. a lot of people are apparently suffering under the lack of assistance and help with problems using there DR800.

of course i know that the company is at his feet again, but only for the professional customer. whatever that means. i was in the understanding that the company would continue with the software part. it seems a misunderstanding.

it's typical: setting up a company, failing to keep it alive and then starting in a different form and leaving the old customer running around in the dessert.
well done, boys, well done.
