Differences between books

regular expressions (left side) should be marked but without the s, same for regexs (right side).

Interna: Better to start with
Find: regular expressions
Replace: regexes.

Why should the s be left out? Highlighting the entire word is in fact much smarter. Since, in fact, the entire word was changed.

IF it used a line-by-line unified diff, then I would rather see just the changed characters highlighted and pick out the words myself.
e.g. diff-highlight

But for a side-by-side diff like the Editor uses, I prefer it the way it is. Conservation of utility.

That in addition to the note also an argumentation is required - it surprises me.

I'm going to feel free to *not* install such a switch, since, as I said before, I know of no compelling reasons to prefer character by character highlighting.

Kovids point is that this is not a character difference program. It is context sensitive. The context is books and hence words. Highlighting the words that have changed, rather than the individual characters, makes reading the changes easy.

As an example of what I mean, if you are comparing versions of the book before and after someone ran a spelling checker over it, highlighting the different letters doesn't help work out which changes shouldn't have been made. In that case, highlighting the letters will probably make it harder to read the words and make you focus on the letters instead.
