October 2014 Book Club Nominations
12:00 AM by WT Sharpe in Reading Recommendations \| Book Clubs MobileRead Book Club October 2014 Nominations Help us select the book that the MobileRead Book Club will read for October, 2014. The nominations will run through midnight EST September 30 or until 10 books have made the list. The poll will then be posted and will remain open for five days. Book selection category for October is: Books from The Patricia Clark Memorial Library (AKA The MobileRead Library). In order for a book to be included in the poll it needs THREE NOMINATIONS (original nomination, a second and a third). How Does This Work? The Mobile Read Book Club (MRBC) is an informal club that requires nothing of you. Each month a book is selected by polling. On the last week of that month a discussion thread is started for the book. If you want to participate feel free. There is no need to "join" or sign up. All are welcome. How Does a Book Get Selected? Each book that is nominated will be listed in a poll at the end of the nomination period. The book that polls the most votes will be the official selection. How Many Nominations Can I Make? Each participant has 3 nominations. You can nominate a new book for consideration or nominate (second, third) one that has already been nominated by another person. How Do I Nominate a Book? Please just post a message with your nomination. If you are the FIRST to nominate a book, please try to provide an abstract to the book so others may consider their level of interest. How Do I Know What Has Been Nominated? Just follow the thread. This message will be updated with the status of the nominations as often as I can. If one is missed, please just post a message with a multi-quote of the 3 nominations and it will be added to the list ASAP. When is the Poll? The poll thread will open at the end of the nomination period, or once there have been 10 books with 3 nominations each. At that time a link to the initial poll thread will be posted here and this thread will be closed. The floor is open to nominations. B&N removed download option on all books in "My Nook" library
04:03 PM by library addict in E-Book General \| General Discussions I have a Sony, Kobo, and Nexus tablet, but not a Nook. I have purchased books from B&N in the past (mostly due to some good sale prices) and they have the books I purchased from Fictionwise there (I think it was Fictionwise. It was one of the multitude of now closed stores anyway). It seems they have suddenly removed the "download" option from all of the books in my library. Is this just a glitch or what? More details: The Digital Reader [ADDITIONS by pdurrant] Pertinent informantion from later posts in the thread: Just tweeted my annoyance to @NOOK_Care, and this is their reply: "The ability to sideload NOOK purchased content has been discontinued. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause." So I guess the ability to download to your computer is gone for good. Here is part of the email I got back from them: Dear Customer, Greetings from Barnes and Noble! Thank you for contacting us. I'm sorry to learn that the download option on your books are missing. On behalf of Barnes & Noble, please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused. We’re sorry, but the ability to sideload NOOK purchased content has been discontinued. If you are attempting to unlock a sideloaded file, you will not be able to do so. We apologize for any inconvenience. However, your NOOK purchases are available for re-download from the NOOK cloud, and you may continue to sideload any other supported file format. I hope that I was able to address your concern accordingly. It is my great honor and privilege to assist you with this concern.

New Kindle Voyage

Apparently leaked site info from Germany and Spain talks about a new Kindle Voyage with higher resolution available in November. There are no images of the new Kindle Voyage available, but the specifications suggest it will have a new page press sensor to turn pages by pressing lightly on the bezel, alongside "intelligent front lighting." Also it mentions a 300 ppi display on the 6-inch device that comes in the usual WiFi and 3G versions. The 112 x 116 mm dimensions suggest the Voyage will be smaller and at 8mm deep (can you say new round of cases?). Amazon's new Family Library feature lets you share purchases as a household

Alongside its new line of Kindle announcements, it's introducing a new feature called Family Library that lets people in the same household share books, audiobooks, Prime Instant videos, and any apps or games that were bought off Amazon's Appstore. Some interesting findings here, including the fact that 88% of American adults under age 30 read at least one book in the past year versus 79% of those age 30 and older. Also, the use of e-books among young adults has increased.
