FBReader 0.7 released with Plucker support

03:26 PM by MishaS in E-Book Software | Reading and Management

A new version of FBReader has been released and you can download it from a new place. I'm very sorry for not providing packages for the Nokia 770 yet... I was quite busy as of late.

New features in version 0.7 include:

  • support for new file formats (plucker, ztxt, palmdoc)
  • scrolling with overlaps
  • configurable keybindings

Currently FBReader works on Sharp Zaurus with Qtopia-based ROMs and pdaXrom, Siemens Simpad with Opensimpad 0.9.0/Opie ROM and Linux desktops. A port for the Maemo platform is under development.

Handheld sales continue to drop, says IDC

11:17 AM by Colin Dunstan in Miscellaneous | Lounge

While it has been quiet among the omniscient market gurus, they now strike back with their gloomy news around the handheld industry. IDC is claiming that sales of handheld devices continue to drop for a seventh consecutive quarter, with total shipments falling 16.9% year on year in Q3 2005.

#1: Palm, with a 22.7% decline year on year.
#2: HP with sales decreasing by 35.4% year on year.
#3: Acer with sales growing 421% year on year.
#4: Dell with a 13.9% decline year on year.

As always it's important to read the small print behind these numbers. For IDC, handheld devices do not include telephony but may include wireless capabilities that enable Internet access and text communication. In another words, the Palm Treo is not a handheld.

Meanwhile, research firm Canalys sees global shipments of smart mobile devices surging up 75% year on year, with handheld shipments falling 18%, and converged devices more than double in volume.

OSoft - OpenReader partnership announced

10:31 AM by Colin Dunstan in E-Book General | News

Nothing you haven't heard before, just now you can read it in an official announcement that OSoft Partners has teamed up with the OpenReader Consortium to work on the first OpenReader-compatible e-book software. A quote with our friend David of Teleread:

Whether it's Google or a small online store, we're eager to help everyone adopt open standards," says co-founder David Rothman, OpenReader's strategy and external relations director. "We'll raze the tower of eBabel so e-books can be reliably read 500 years from now. Reading software may change over time but the basic electronic format can remain the same."

Microsoft announces MSN Book Search

02:38 PM by Colin Dunstan in E-Book General | News

In direct competition with Google for providing an online book search tool, MSN Search is teaming up with the Internet Archive to scan and digitize publicly available print materials, as well as to work with copyright owners to legally scan protected materials. Whereas Google has gone it alone, Microsoft is joining an industry coalition, the Yahoo-backed Open Content Alliance.

"With MSN Book Search, we are excited to be working with libraries worldwide to digitize and index information from the world’s printed materials, taking another step in our efforts to better answer people’s questions with trusted content from the best sources," said Christopher Payne, corporate vice president of MSN Search at Microsoft Corp. "We believe people will benefit from the ability to not just view a page, but to easily act on that data in contextually relevant ways, both online in the search experience and in the applications they are using."

By initially focusing on books in the public domain and by stressing the importance of respecting copyrights Microsoft clearly hopes to avoid similar legal issues that have recently plagued its rival Google.

The digitized content will primarily be print material that has not been copyrighted, and Microsoft will clearly respect all copyrights and work with each partner providing the information to work out mutually agreeable protections for copyrights.

Microsoft is doing something right here. While Google is still busy proving to the rest of the world that its intentions are good, Microsoft is forming new alliances to find better ways of balancing publisher and author rights with global accessibility.
