Some disappointing Star Trek e-book news

06:32 PM by Kane in E-Book General | News

Simon and Schuster has decided to put the Star Trek ebook originals line on "hiatus". They will still offer ebook versions of all the paper Trek books that they publish, but are stopping the publication of original ebooks lines like Corps of Engineers and the recent Next Generation mini-series Slings and Arrows.

The Trek originals were some of the best selling ebooks out of all of the company's electronic publishing line, but that wasn't enough it seems. To be fair, the Corps of Engineers series ran from 2001 to till just recently. It's still disappointing, though.

Since we're on the subject of Star Trek, I've noticed some older threads here asking about reading recommendations. I've read a lot of it, so if anyone has any questions I'd be happy to make some suggestions.

Not exactly an e-paper device but maybe it's pointing to the future (pun intended):

Electronic tattoo display runs on blood
by Lisa Zyga

Jim Mielke's wireless blood-fueled display is a true merging of technology and body art. At the recent Greener Gadgets Design Competition, the engineer demonstrated a subcutaneously implanted touch-screen that operates as a cell phone display, with the potential for 3G video calls that are visible just underneath the skin.

The basis of the 2x4-inch "Digital Tattoo Interface" is a Bluetooth device made of thin, flexible silicon and silicone. It´s inserted through a small incision as a tightly rolled tube, and then it unfurls beneath the skin to align between skin and muscle. Through the same incision, two small tubes on the device are attached to an artery and a vein to allow the blood to flow to a coin-sized blood fuel cell that converts glucose and oxygen to electricity. After blood flows in from the artery to the fuel cell, it flows out again through the vein.

Is this the next Mac tablet, or just a Generic Icon that represent all Ipods?

03:26 PM by Nate the great in E-Book General | News

In addition to unveiling the App Store, a section of the iTunes Store devoted to selling software for iPhones and iPod touches, Apple announced yesterday that it would enable selected developers to create their own private pages on the App Store to distribute content to a limited audience, rather than the entirety of the Apple customer base. Example: EF Tours has a page that can only be accessed by people who are going on a tour with that company.

If you look at that page, you'll see something in the yellow title bar. I think it's the new tablet.

iPhone SDK Released!

11:15 AM by NatCh in E-Book Readers | Apple Devices

For those who have been waiting with bated breath, Apple has released the SDK for its iPhone.

From ZDNet:

In a news conference Thursday (otherwise known as Feburary 35th), Apple unveiled the long-awaited iPhone native Software Development Kit (SDK). It can be used by any developers to create native applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Up to now, developers have been limited to writing Web apps that ran inside the Safari browser (though various “jailbreak” hacks allowed unofficial programming). But now you can write programs using the same APIs that Apple’s built-in programs use.

The writer includes a fairly in-depth look at what's included in the SDK. I won't go into it here, but for those interested, you can find the full write up at the above link.

E-Book: "As the Oceans Rise" with exclusive MR coupon

05:47 PM by Alexander Turcic in E-Book General | Deals and Resources (No...

Most people acknowledge that global warming poses a serious threat to the planet. In As the Oceans Rise, Chuck Tremper explores the various actions that could be taken by governments, by industry and by individuals to mitigate the effects. Of particular interest is Chapter 5 -- find an excerpt here -- where Dr. Tremper talks about the transition from printed to electronic materials, with an emphasis on e-books:

Awareness of e-reading's benefits for the climate could accelerate adoption. Although the trees used for making paper are a renewable resource, they're being consumed more quickly than they're being replaced. As long as the total demand for all paper products, including the books, newspapers, and magazines that e-readers can eliminate, exceeds the worldwide capacity of sustainable forestry, rainforests and other precious woodlands will continue to vanish. Even though e-readers consume energy and become electronic waste, they take us in the right direction by reducing not only the demand for paper, but also the energy needed to produce and transport printed materials.

As the Oceans Rise is available in various e-book formats, including Adobe PDF (optimized for e-readers), Mobipocket, Microsoft LIT and MP3. Mr. Tremper has kindly offered MobileRead members a 10% discount; to use it enter the code 1041 at the check out.
