iRex Technologies files for Chapter 11

06:48 PM by wdejager in E-Book General | News

The Netherlands-based company iRex Technologies deals with financial difficulties and has filed for chapter 11, stated iRex-ceo Hans Brons today. The much-anticipated DR800 was delayed due too FCC procedures and hence iRex missed the all-important Christmas shopping season. That was a direct cause of the financial problems.

It is not clear yet whether iRex, inventor of eInk technology and one of the first producers of e-reading devices, will resume business later on, or that the company will file for bankruptcy. "The expectations are still positive", according to Mr. Brons.

New from Apple's WWDC: iBooks

11:16 AM by kjk in E-Book Readers | Apple Devices

http://live.gdgt.com/2010/06/07/live...note-coverage/

“I’d like to tell you about one of our apps we’re updating today: iBooks. … I’ve got a few stats for you. In the first 65 days, users have downloaded over 5m books, that’s about 2.5 books per iPad, which is terrific.”

new features:

“We’ve added another big enhancement — the ability to view and read PDFs. So we’ve built that in.” Big applause. “You can now view PDFs. We’ve put a little selector at the top — books and PDFs. You get a whole new bookshelf just for PDFs, they just look gorgeous.”

10:10AM - “As you know, you can create highlights, you can also make notes. Now you can make notes. In addition, we’ve added a control to just tap and bookmark a page — under ToC you’ll see all the notes, highlights, and bookmarks.”

Interesting, the PDFs are listed in a separate bookshelf.

A manufacturer wants your opinion on 9.7" device features

07:58 AM by zelda_pinwheel in E-Book General | General Discussions

I've been contacted by a manufacturer who would like to know what features are considered important in a 9.7" device. Your answers will be taken seriously, so please vote for the features you consider priorities. The poll covers both hardware and software features.

Multiple choices are possible.

Thanks !

Pandigital Novel first impressions

05:28 PM by Nate the great in E-Book Readers | Android Devices

I just posted my first impressions of the new Pandigital Novel over on my blog. Here is the first part (it's pretty good summary):

This post is a collection of first impressions. I usually post this on the day I get a device, and then post a full review a coupe weeks later. If I were you, I wouldn't decide for or against the Novel based on this post. At best, you might use this post to help you decide to wait.

I bought my Novel at Kohl's. Someone posted a comment yesterday and said that most stores now have it in stock. At my local store it was behind the jewelry counter.

So what do I think? I'm not happy with it, and here's why:

* touchscreen is funky
* Wifi is broken
* the Novel is slow to respond to input
* you can't charge over USB
* few options in reader
* few organization options in library

Before you read further, I want to make it clear that I don't slam an e-reader without good reason. Everything in this post is written based on having the Novel in front of me. I didn't say very many nice things about the Novel because I couldn't find any. I actually went into this with high hopes, and I'm disappointed. The Novel is a rather unexceptional device.

The Novel Network / MyPadMedia - SCAM WARNING! Selling access to a free site

06:48 PM by zelda_pinwheel in E-Book General | News

WARNING !

It has just been revealed that a site called "MyPadMedia" has been selling access to feedbooks, promising unlimited downloads of new books, newspapers, comic books etc. for 50$. I'm pretty sure feedbooks needs no introduction anymore, but for any newcomers, it's a brilliant site offering thousands of PD and CC original books for free, beautifully presented in the format of your choice. MyPadMedia charged users 50$ and then re-directed them to feedbooks, with a MyPadMedia banner pasted across the top of the page.

The scam was revealed by Gear Diary, who contacted feedbooks today to verify their affiliation with MyPadMedia. Feedbooks responded immediately, taking steps to sqash this scam. Visitors coming from MyPadMedia will now see a special warning screen to inform them of the situation, and legal action has also been taken.

More details on Gear Diary who broke the story. Avoid like the plague, and spread the word !

Read the whole Gear Diary vs. MyPadMedia saga here.

UPDATE : new name for MyPadMedia : they are now operating the same scam under the name of "The Novel Network", and have created multiple websites / fake exposé pages with titles like "MyPadMedia, a big scam ?" which naturally conclude that it's in fact the best thing since sliced bread. (thanks also to Worldwalker for reporting this) Spread the word, and try to link back to this thread so it will rise in the google search results !
