This only works for MOBI library ebooks, but see Kindle, DRM, and Confussion.

I just posted the same question. I know that public libraries have ebooks, but none in my area say they can be used on the kindle. My library says "Download audiobooks and ebooks at home to your own MP3 player, iPod, or Sony Reader, Nook, or computer with eMediaLibrary's 24/7 digital library". So is there a way to convert them to work? Is it really hard?

I promise: the one and only time I will cross-post here.
This turned out to be ridiculously easy -- snagging the Kindle pid, installing Overdrive to borrow the book (this is a requirement of your library), removing the DRM with a one dialog box entry (input name, output name), converting to mobi, dropping onto the Kindle. It sounds way more complicated than it is. You can even return an epub early to make it available to other patrons. And nothing wrong with deleting it once read; you can always borrow it again. If there is a caveat ... it's that many libraries have a pretty sorry collection of library e-books at the moment. |
