2010 Reading Goals
With 2010 only a few days away, it's time to get ready for a new year! Forget resolutions, what we care about here is what everyone wants to read
I thought this would be a good place for everyone to put their reading goals down, and who knows? Maybe this thread will still be around until the end of the year (although usually with resolutions I give up somewhere in February). So everyone, post your reading goals here and keep us updated on how you are doing! Feel free to edit your post if it takes you a while to come up with what you want or strike out what you've accomplished. I'm hoping to see lots of books on here that will interest me and others. And if you see someone else has a book on their list that you have, support each other and read it together! Carry on! |

Here's my goals. With the series, I've excluded the ones I've already read.
Individual books: -The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul by Douglas Adams -The Plague by Albert Camus -The Beautiful Strange by Julia London* -The Ruthless Charmer by Julia London* -The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett -The Bonfire of the Vanities by Tom Wolfe -The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald -Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth-Grahame Smith* -Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury -Private Arrangements by Sherry Thomas -The Secret History by Donna Tartt -Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt *these have been on my Reader for way too long and I really need to read them. Highlander Series by Karen Marie Moning -To Tame a Highland Warrior -The Highlander's Touch -Kiss of the Highlander -The Dark Highlander -The Immortal Highlander -Spell of the Highlander Lucy Stone Series by Leslie Meier -Trick or Treat Murder -Back to School Murder -Christmas Cookie Murder -Valentine Murder -Turkey Day Murder -Wedding Day Murder -Birthday Party Murder -Father's Day Murder -New Year's Eve Murder -Mother's Day Murder Non-Fiction Disaster Books (pulled most of these from the Listopia list on Goodreads) -Alive The Story of the Andes Survivors by Piers Paul Reed -The Circus Fire A True Story of an American Tragedy by Stewart O'Nan -A Crack in the Edge of the World America and the Great California Earthquake of 1906 by Simon Winchester -Triangle The Fire That Changed America by David von Drehle -The Indifferent Stars Above The Harrowing Saga of a Donner Party Bride by Daniel James Brown -Under a Flaming Sky The Great Hinckley Firestorm of 1894 by Daniel James Brown -The Children's Blizzard by David Laskin The Worst Hard Time The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl by Timothy Egan There's also a large number of books I'm looking forward to in 2010, but I'm not including those as I generally read them right away or shortly thereafter. I want to at least read 200 books this year, but I'm going to aim for 250. |

As for what I'll be reading: Analog SFF, Asimov's SF, F&SF and Interzone magazines Lots of nice new SF and Fantasy The occasional mystery (e.g. any new No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency books that aren't a silly price.) But I don't really have a list of titles. Hmm... listing them here from 1st January as I start them would be fun! Oh - and I'll give them a score as I finish them. The marking will be quite harsh - to enable amazing books to stand out from the merely very good. I might update marks as I go along. And just for fun, I'll add in each book's net cost to me (NB this is not their current price, but the price I paid, subtracting any micropay rebate if from fictionwise).
FINAL TOTALS FOR 2010: TBR: 417 Ebooks read in 2010: 160 Non-free ebooks read in 2010: 138 Total cost of ebooks read in 2010: $512.48 Average cost of non-free ebooks:: $3.71 * I'm obviously not going to make my goal of a TBR list of under 200. Indeed, it seems unlikely that I'll make under 400 by the end of the year. Perhaps if I aim for under 300 by the end of 2011... Perhaps getting those Agatha Chrsties in February was a mistake :-) Books bought/obtained in 2010: 246 (January +14: four from February webscription and six I bought in late December from fictionwise and had forgotten to download, and four magazines (F&SF, Analog, Asimov's, Grantville Gazette 27)) (February +169: four from March webscription, Jim Baen's Universe magazine; Analog; Asimov's; The Girl Who Played with Fire; 78 Agatha Christie mysteries; Ender in Exile; Dead and Gone; End of Eternity; The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, 79 romance/mystery freebies from fictionwise) (March +7: One Agatha Christie, Grantville Gazette 28, Interzone 225, Interzone 226, Analog, Asimov's, Dead Witch Walking) (April +4: Analog, Asimov's, F&SF, JBU) (May +7: The Eternity Brigade, Tea Time for the Traditionally Built, The Double Comfort Safari Club, Thin Blood, Analog, Asimov's, Interzone) (June: +6: The Girl Who Kicked a Hornet's Nest, His Majesty's Dragon, F&SF, Analog, Asimov's, Oath of Fealty) (July: +1 French Fried) (August +8: Dissolution, Analog, Asimov's, Interzone, F&SF, Soul Identity, Winnie-the-Pooh, Moominpappa at Sea) (September: +8: Analog, Asimov's, Spellwright, Cybill Disobedience, Lyra's Oxford, Flinx Transcendent, Ultimate Hitchhiker's Omnibus, Into the Out Of) (October: +6: Analog, Asimov's, F&SF, The Wizard and the War Machine, The Cyborg and the Sorcerers, The Story of Your Life and Others) (November: +2: Analog, Asimov's) (December: +14: Heinlein Bundle (Citizen of the Galaxy, Have Space Suit — Will Travel, Methuselah's Children, Revolt in 2100, Tramp Royale, Grumbles from the Grave), Asimov's, Analog, The Soapmaster's Apprentice, Why Didn't They Ask Evans, Murder is Easy, A Pocket Full of Rye, Hickory Dickory Dock, Interzone ) ** one of the reasons I'll miss fictionwise. This was actually on a 100% micropay rebate. I count 100% rebates at 50% of the cost. Last edited by pdurrant; 09-08-2011 at 05:58 AM. Reason: comments/keeping up-to-date/added book numbers |

I need to think about it for a bit. My initial reaction is that if I continue to read as I have been the last few months, I'd be happy -- that is something like 4-5 novels (or equivalent) a month. I'll come back and update this though if I come up with more specific goals than that.

To Read:
1. Actually finish Les Mis 2. The Princess Bride That's the only specifics I can think of. There's a ton of books on my Reader and computer waiting to be read. Hopefully I'll get to some of those before buying more. |

I don't really have a "goal" so to speak... but I do have a reading list.
Some books that I think I will tackle... The Stand (yes, never read it and hear such good stuff about it.) One or two more classics. Not sure which yet. I keep wanting to start the Womens Murder Club books but seems to keep going to something else and also head a lot of good on this forum about the Dresden File's books. See... what happens is I don't buy ebooks ahead of time. If I did, I would probably stick to reading those first since I don't like to just buy books to sit unread for months and months. So, I end up buying or getting what strikes me at that moment. I do want to spend more time reading and less in front of the tube. That is sort of a goal I guess. BOb |

I have three major areas that are glutting my to-read list: back issues of magazine subscriptions, the complete Southern Vampire series and freebies from the Sony store. I want to plow through those and then devote myself to quality reading.
Also: if it was a freebie and I don't like it, I hereby give myself permission to delete it and move on to something else... |

Hrm....
My reading goals will change if I buy a different device in the next year. With my e-ink reader, I focus more on English books. If something with a good screen comes out in 2010, I will start making more of the Chinese books I've been avoiding or reading only on paper. As far as specific reading goals...hmm...can't think of any specific books I'm dying to read. I might reread some classics and see if any amusing gems can be found. New Dresden Files book comes out in April, so I'll probably pick that up. It'd be nice to find some more series that are intelligent and light-hearted without all the contrived sex, angst, and drama that I've noticed a lot of. Find some more funny stuff too. |

Hi Y'all! Merry Christmas!
Lilac, you tickle me with your New Year's Resolution reading lists. Did you ever read Rebecca? I had about a dozen on my TBR list, so I've got them loaded up and ready to go. I added 4 yesterday after reading about Mary Stewart's Merlin series. I'm such a slow reader that this dozen will probably take the whole year to finish off. |
