New Member, want to share DRM findings

Hi everyone,

New member here, joined this forum because I encountered the LCP removal method posted here.

Based on the findings described there I went ahead and made a script to automate the process (Electron code to automate injecting the passphrase, hook into the decryption process, and outputting the "clean epub"). I would like to reshare it here as thanks for helping me find a way to read books purchased elsewhere (now that I try to avoid Amazon when I can) on my old Kindle.

I tried posting there in that thread, though got a notification it was awaiting moderator approval. Thought in the meantime I'd post an introduction here to let y'all know I'm a real human and not some spammer just dumping suspicious scripts in random threads.

If posting scripts as .txt attachments is frowned upon, I'm happy to answer questions about the steps required to automate edent's approach. It shouldn't be too hard to reproduce for anyone with rudimentary JavaScript knowledge, particularly if done with the help of AI code agents etc

So perhaps I won't be able to answer questions here anyway? And perhaps that's why my post in the other thread wasn't accepted...

Thought I guess I would love clarification on what is and isn't allowed here, considering that thread is allowed to persist?

I would like to make clear, that like eden's method, the automated script I came up with does not reverse engineer the encryption method, and does not allow removal without having access to the passphrase for the (legally purchased) LCPL file. It merely "remote-controls" the official, open-source Thorium reader in such a way that it the decrypted epub content it uses for display can also be outputted to disk in order to read on other (non-compatible) devices.

Sorry if this is "over the line" for what is allowed to be discussed? I merely want to help people read their legally purchased ebooks on their devices of choice, and would like to do so in whatever way deemed permissible.

If e.g. the automation itself is what's against the rules, would it be permissible to discuss e.g. the steps required to circumvent Thorium's attempts at attaching a debugger, which make the (still manual) approach posted in the thread linked in OP more difficult than described in the blog post?

Talking how to remove LCP DRM is not allowed. When LCP DRM removal was added to DeDRM, a DMCA takedown notice was put in place. SO that had to be removed from DeDRM.

Yes, no details or posted tools are allowed (as the owner of MR doesn't want lawyers hounding him). What is allowed is to link to other sites where such things have been posted. So you could create a blog or something, post your script there and post the link to the blog here.

Alright, I guess was confused by the amount of links and references to Epubor throughout the forums, including from the Wiki itself. A paid tool that publicly advertises itself as capable of removing LCP DRM. I just thought it was a shame people end up paying money to be able to read their purchased books on devices of their choice, when it is relatively easy to do it yourself for free.

Your other thread has been approved now, but without the attachment.

Links to external sites are fine. Mentioning the name of tools is fine.

Detailed help with DRM removal or discussion of the technical details is not fine.

Most mentions of epubor here are complaints about the way they rip off the open source tools without attribution.

NoDRM's fork of DeDRM is the best thing at the moment, IMO.
