Readium LCP DRM
I've been interested in Readium LCP lately, so I'm looking into it.
LCP DRM - Extracting Files - MobileRead Forums There's some information in the previous thread, but I'll summarize what I know. Readium LCP is an ISO International Standard, referenced as ISO/IEC 23078-2:2024. The European Accessibility Act (EAA) has strongly driven the adoption of Readium LCP in Europe. In Japan, the Act on Promotion of Reading Environment for Persons with Visual Impairments (Reading Barrier-Free Act) is the equivalent, and the government is considering promoting the adoption of Readium LCP. Tolino eReaders already support Readium LCP, but Kobo eReaders do not yet. According to EDRLab, this is expected to arrive in 2026. There are multiple versions of Readium LCP DRM. 1.0 was once supported by DeDRM, but they were forced to remove support due to a DMCA takedown. abustany/lcp-decrypt was also DMCA takedowned. As far as is known, the removal solution for the latest Readium LCP 2.5 DRM is held exclusively by Epubor. Another thing you can do is debug Thorium Reader with DevTools to extract the files. |

The solution for debugging Thorium is far too time-consuming and complicated for an average user with no specialized IT knowledge (like me, for example).
I'm guessing if Readium LCP gets more widely adopted, there will be more solutions to hack it. At the moment it's still pretty marginal. Personally I will never buy an ebook I can't remove the DRM from. That's absolutely non-negotiable for me. |

Europe and Japan have their heads firmly entrenched up their backside. Readium LCP has nothing to do with assistive technology for eBooks. It is just a DRM format.

DRM makes ebooks less accessible to assistive technology.

Yes, they use pretty Orwellian language. Many libraries here switched to a service using LCP because of some EU laws about accessibility. And instead of being able to read e-books on e-readers people were forced to read them on the library website, which had close to no customization options. Much less than on a Kindle - you couldn't even set the margins.
They were forced to start offering downloads through ACSM again. Sadly, some of the e-books in my region are only available with LCP DRM. So I just won't buy them. |

I can see case where unbreakable DRM can lead to more piracy. Theoretical situation, someone breaks it, doesn't publish method, instead starts releasing books to shadow libraries. People just get those pirated copies instead of buying it and stripping DRM themselves.

DRM does limit accessibility. For example, on a Kobo we have an old version of RMSDK and KePub. If you borrow an eBook from the library with DRM, you can only view it in RMSDK. But if it's using ePub3 specific features that you want to see, you'd have to convert it to KePub. But you can't because it has DRM. |

Amazon has services for sending EPub to Kindles. And there is software, like calibre and plugins, that can be used to convert epub to a kindle compatible format. And if the epub has DRM, it can most likely be removed.

Pull one of the other ones, it's got bells on! And yes, I am conflicted about removing DRM from library loans. For my personal uses, I do not remove DRM from loans. For Kindle users outside the USA where they do not have access to library loans in Amazon formats, it is pretty much a necessity for them to use public libraries with their ereaders. What's being done is converting ePub to another format so the Kindle can display it. The Kindle is not displaying the ePub directly.

It seems the reason Adobe ADEPT DRM is no longer being used is that it's being phased out.
Adobe sold its Adobe eBook Platform Components (Adobe Content Server, Reader Mobile SDK, and Adobe Digital Editions) to Harman Connected Services. Adobe eBook platform transition to Harman- Frequently Asked Questions |
