Readium LCP DRM
I've been interested in Readium LCP lately, so I'm looking into it.
LCP DRM - Extracting Files - MobileRead Forums There's some information in the previous thread, but I'll summarize what I know. Readium LCP is an ISO International Standard, referenced as ISO/IEC 23078-2:2024. The European Accessibility Act (EAA) has strongly driven the adoption of Readium LCP in Europe. In Japan, the Act on Promotion of Reading Environment for Persons with Visual Impairments (Reading Barrier-Free Act) is the equivalent, and the government is considering promoting the adoption of Readium LCP. Tolino eReaders already support Readium LCP, but Kobo eReaders do not yet. According to EDRLab, this is expected to arrive in 2026. There are multiple versions of Readium LCP DRM. 1.0 was once supported by DeDRM, but they were forced to remove support due to a DMCA takedown. abustany/lcp-decrypt was also DMCA takedowned. As far as is known, the removal solution for the latest Readium LCP 2.5 DRM is held exclusively by Epubor. Another thing you can do is debug Thorium Reader with DevTools to extract the files. |

The solution for debugging Thorium is far too time-consuming and complicated for an average user with no specialized IT knowledge (like me, for example).
I'm guessing if Readium LCP gets more widely adopted, there will be more solutions to hack it. At the moment it's still pretty marginal. Personally I will never buy an ebook I can't remove the DRM from. That's absolutely non-negotiable for me. |

Europe and Japan have their heads firmly entrenched up their backside. Readium LCP has nothing to do with assistive technology for eBooks. It is just a DRM format.

DRM makes ebooks less accessible to assistive technology.

Yes, they use pretty Orwellian language. Many libraries here switched to a service using LCP because of some EU laws about accessibility. And instead of being able to read e-books on e-readers people were forced to read them on the library website, which had close to no customization options. Much less than on a Kindle - you couldn't even set the margins.
They were forced to start offering downloads through ACSM again. Sadly, some of the e-books in my region are only available with LCP DRM. So I just won't buy them. |
