It's good that the limitations on ebooks are being more widely spread.

I suspect the author doesn't know that books bought from Kobo are only licensed for the purchaser, and no-one else.

She probably doesn't. But at least she now has more control over her eBooks then she did before.

She has more control now that she's removed the DRM.

Thanks. I actually forgot that the video was posted or I would have posted a link to the post instead of posting the video again.

Let's say you don't own a Kindle. You buy a Kindle PW6. So you have the PW6 and maybe the Kindle app on your phone and/or computer. Later on you buy a Kobo and want to read your purchased Kindle eBooks on your Kobo. How do you download your Kindle eBooks such that you can remove the DRM and convert to ePub to read on a Kobo?

I believe there are 2 methods (maybe three), and at least one thread (on this forum) dedicate to discussing removing DRM from Amazon ebook purchases. Sorry, I don't have the link.

Uh, you just read on your Kindle, a perfectly serviceable device? That's my go-to method. If there's a pressing reason to use the Kobo, read something else in the meantime? (And perhaps stop buying ebooks for inventory, so you don't have an issue down the line. I'm less good about that. )

I know there is the Android method. But is there any other method if you don't have a pre-2024 Kindle registered to your account? The Windows and Mac apps are getting updated such that they are not longer compatible with DeDRM. The PW6 no longer allows D&T. I'm thinking the other two don't as well.

Not that long ago I finally got around to retrieving a handful of Kindle books from an ancient moribund account. I downloaded an older version of Kindle for PC to my Windows 11 computer, added the relevant plugin to Calibre, downloaded the books and put them in Calibre. Done. It was a trivial process. I did figure I had better do it while I still could -- but I wouldn't have been brokenhearted if I'd let it go too long, either.

Indeed most people buying Kindle ebooks use an App on a phone or tablet (which includes Amazon Fire, one of the best selling because it's cheap and heavily marketed).

But I'll stop buying ebooks at Amazon if they disable Download and Transfer for my Paperwhite 3, though I have the Kindle app on my phones and tablet.

My TBR pile of PD books is about 5,000 anyway.

Note Amazon claims on the web page when you buy an ebook "You own this" and eventually copyright expires. Also T&C are not always legally enforceable, or economically enforceable.

This notice is in an ebook purchased from Amazon this week. Following this copyright notice strictly I can not even use it on my kindle.

I own the file not the copyrighted material inside said file. I can do what I will as long as I do not distribute or sell copies of said copyrighted material.

Copyright law--in the USA--allows fair use for more than just book reviews,
