A thought to improve Calibre.

After some think, I have an idea. There are some website where we can search and get a list of urls, and we can select a url to read as a book. After I know there is news and recipes function in calibre, I think calibre can be more powerful, as crawler to fetch book, as aggregate search tool to search book.

I read it. It seems that this plugin cannot let I design own recipes for website not in its list?

Often you need to manually edit styles, levels and remove adverts. Very many sites need multiple pages and that isn't standard. So I prefer to copy/paste to wordprocessor, fix and save as docx for Calibre.

So I can only imagine a plugin working for one design of website and not ideal either.

What to do would depend on how good the ePub is. t might be better to edit the ePub then dump into Word. The problem is that if you don't use Word correctly, you end up woth even more of a mess then you started with. So forget any word processor and just edit the ePub in Calibre or Sigil.

browser addins like send to Kindle will grab a web article and format it as a "book", then send it.... but only to Kindle i.e. you are getting a /mobi file, probably. but you can convert that.

I don't know of any that grab a web page and send it as an epub but then again, I have bot really looked for one.
Tools like pocket send web articles in a book-like layout to their own app which runs e.g. on recent kobo e-ink devices. Pocket will also sync across all of your Kobos.

it may not be too hard to write a Pocket plug in for calibre ?

Couldn't you use Kobo's desktop application to download your files and import to Calibre using Calibre's built-in Add Books from Folder? I don't use the Kobo app, I just know it exists, but if Pocket will send to Kobo, it seems like this should work.

I don't see this as a calibre issue at all.
If you want to grab web articles and read them on your reader, device, there are existing tools for that..
Send to kindle, for kindles
Pocket, for Kobo

There may be others but both those work very well. They don't just blindly grab all, they try to filter and reformat on the fly to give a good result even from a messy web page

Hello everyone. I should say I'm very disappointed to see Calibre no more "Mac OSX 10.11.6" compliant, because I'm stuck on it ad vitam eternam. Good luck though. Always good work, Kovid. Take care.

Apple merryground. They want you to buy new iShiny at 60% to 90% profit margin.
Not Kovid's fault.
Maybe you can dual boot to Linux? Mint is nice and I know some people buy Macs and only run Linux on them, though that seems strange.

Or dual-boot Windows 10 (best OS for dealing with eBooks).

That's an Apple issue. It is Apple's fault that they decide to end-of-life your perfectly good hardware.

What you can do is setup a dual-boot with Windows 10 and you'll then be able to run the latest Calibre.

To the best of my knowledge, the youngest Mac that can't (officially; there are patches) upgrade past El Capitan is at least eleven years old.

(And don't earlier versions of Calibre still run on it just fine?)

But depending on which Reader you have, there might not be any support with an older version of Calibre. And say you have a Kobo with the latest firmware, you might not know that Kobo Utilities has support for the new series feature. Where that works seamlessly using 4.12+.

Yes you can use an earlier version, but you may lose features/fixes and/or support for your device.

Yes, not having access to brand new features is a risk you take when your hardware is over a decade old. It's not unique to any particular company. My old TV doesn't have all the newest smart TV features either.

The person who posted has a Kobo Glo, and so far as I know we've not yet hit any situation where "attempt to support newer firmware" has failed, have we? (And it's easily fixed if we do.)
