Kobo Aura will not connect to WIFI

I have a Kobo Aura 6 inch that will not connect to WIFI.
I connected it to my PC and updated the firmware to the latest firmware with Kobo Desktop and then did the Factory Reset but it still will not connect to WIFI.
I have tried changing my wireless router from mixed to N only and have changed it to an open network with no password but it still will not connect to WIFI.

I have a Kobo Aura HD that connects with no problem.
Are there any other tricks to try before giving up?

The obvious question to ask:

Is it just your WiFi network that it won't connect to, or will it not connect to any WiFi network?

Yes, does it connect anywhere?

And some other questions:
  • What happens when you try to connect?
  • Is an error displayed?
  • Has it ever connected?
  • Did you have internet connectivity at the time? When connecting, the device attempts to get a page from the net. If this cannot be retrieved, the WiFi connection is dropped.

I am trying to do the initial setup when it says "Welcome to Kobo. Set up your e-reader in just a few easy steps. Set up over Wi-Fi."
Then it searches for Wi-Fi connections and it finds my router.
Then when I try to connect it tries for about 30 seconds and then comes back with the error
Unable to join. Please try again.

It's not a password problem because I switched my router to an open network with no password and it still will not connect that way either.

I also tried changing from mixed mode to N only and that did not work either.

I have not taken it anywhere to test it on a different router but my Aura HD and other devices connect to the same WIFI connection and access the internet just fine.

If it works with your other Kobos it's strange for this one to fail. If it didn't even see the network in the first place, it could be a hardware issue, but...

Did you factory reset it or just format the user partition? It keeps a wifi config file in the root filesystem that does not go away until you factory reset so it could be some leftover getting in the way.

If all else fails you'll just have to setup through PC, update it to latest firmware (download links in this forum) and hope it will work then...

Also any chance that you might have depleted your routers DHCP pool?

I'd like to try your suggestion but I don't know how to install that.

Unzip the attached file and save the KoboRoot.tgz file to the .kobo directory on your device.

Is there any chance you have your router set for a whitelist so that it's not allowing a new device that's not on that list? I overlooked that once ages ago.

Have you taken it to where there is public wifi?

Try that and it will let you know if it is the device or your wifi.

Yes, I know you said you tried two things with your wifi.

There isn't a white list on the router.
I haven't taken it to a public wifi but like I said, my Kobo Aura HD connects just fine as well as several other wireless devices in my home.
I can try to find an open wifi connection but I am in a rural area and it's not easy to find those around here.
I really don't see how it can possibly be my router since the Aura HD works fine with it though.

Your nearest McDonald's or Walmart or Home Depot or Lowe's.
All of them have free wifi. So just take the device the next time you go into town.
