There's a bug in that PDF that PoDoFo (the library calibre uses to update metadata in PDF files) cannot handle. You can report it to them, although IIRC PoDoFo is soon going to have a release with lots of bug fixes, so hopefully it will sort itself out then.

The PDF was in my test library, it's part of a failed experiment with a fanfic fan-fan, so its irrelevant as such. But I'll keep a watch out for the new PoDoFo library and try to remember give another shot then.

I'd that issues with some files. The same unknown bug prevent Acrobat Reader opening it.

I opened it using the PDF-XChange Viewer, changed a metadata character and saved it.

Now Acrobat Reader started working again and Calibre could embed metadata.

I guess PDF-XChange fixed whatever was broken
