Where did the Ysobel font go?
Hi All,
After rooting my Nook about 2 years ago I've been happily using Miller as my preferred reading typeface. Yesterday I ran across information explaining how the Ysobel fonts that shipped with the Nook were specifically designed for e-ink screens. Since the typeface is similar to Miller, I thought it deserved a closer look, so I went to enable it. And subsequently noticed it was missing. Not just missing from the filesystem but also missing from the firmware updates (1.1, 1.2, 1.3) Did the Ysobel font only ship on the original Nook 1.0 Firmware? Is there anything I can do, short of a full system restore to get these files back? Thanks in advance for any advice, Moe Last edited by Mr.Moe; 08-14-2015 at 12:51 PM. Hi, Mr. Moe,
I did some searching and couldn't find a definitive answer, but I suspect that Ysobel only shipped on the original firmware. I double-checked on my (non-rooted) Nook Simple Touch (model BNRV300, software ver. 1.2.1) and can confirm that Ysobel isn't there. This NST has the following six fonts: Caecilia, Malabar, Amasis, Gill Sans, Helvetica Neue and Trebuchet. Sorry that I couldn't be of more help. ![]() |

Thanks Kalwisti,
That's actually very helpful information. I've been digging around too and noticed this CNET video from June 1, 2011 that shows the Ysobel font as an option (at minute 1:35) http://www.cnet.com/videos/new-nook-e-reader/ Based on your observation and the date of this video, I'm starting to think that perhaps only the Nook Simple Touch came loaded with the Ysobel font. Thanks for the extra info. The hunt continues. Mr.Moe |

That actually led me to the current discovery. The firmware 1.0.1 does indeed contains the Ysobel font. Barnes and Noble still has the firmware available here:
http://su.barnesandnoble.com/nook/no...0_1_update.zip I have to admit, I'm not as impressed as I thought I would be. At least Coolreader doesn't appear to be taking advantage of the hinting that these fonts supposedly contain. I wonder if I'd have to revert back to the old firmware and/or use the stock reader to access this functionality. Is there an easy way to get the stock reader to recognize side loaded fonts? My device is rooted, just not sure how to go about getting the files in the right place. |
