Can't update my Kindel

Hi
I have just purchased a Kindle paperwhite and wanted to jailbreak it. But when I look at "update your Kindle" it is greyed out.
The seller did advise me that the serial number had been removed and I would be unable to register with Amazon, not a problem as I never download books from them.
Unfortunately I am also unable to create collections

Anyone help?

serial number "removed", huh? Likely a stolen Kindle. Although I suppose it could've been reported as lost.

Check the firmware version. Chances are it is already updated to fw>=5.6.0 -- which means it cannot be jailbroken anymore.
Well, it still can, if you follow the directions in the sticky for performing the jailbreak over the serial port.

Then make sure you are following the jailbreak instructions properly. What steps have you taken? See the FAQ on the jailbreak thread for some common mistakes.

A lost Kindle that is blacklisted does not change in any way -- Amazon will simply refuse to register it. That should not affect the jailbreak.

Problem is the greyed out section on the Settings list.
Update Your Kindle and Sync and Check for Items can't be accessed.
On the jailbreak instructions I have it states to finish "Update your Kindle"

Because it is not registered.

We have a work-around for that, but you have to follow the jail break instructions for your version of the firmware (and stay away from making wireless connections - to avoid the OTA update headed your way).

Use the instructions in the first post of the Jail break thread.
We don't even try to guess at what someone else may have written.

PS: If you actually do follow that "Update your Kindle" directions - it will update to 5.6.1.1 and you will never jail break it unless you use the serial port.

As knc1 says -- if that button lets itself be clicked and you haven't put the right files on the Kindle, it can only be the OTA update and it will screw you over.

So again -- what steps (like, all of them) have you taken? Start from the beginning.
Include:

What instructions you used.
What jailbreak files you sideloaded?

I have taken no steps as once I had read the instructions, I noted that I would be unable to Update your Kindle.

sorry didn't read all your message. The instructions I used came from NiLuJe 07-31-2012 I got them from Google.
The files are -
Kindle-jailbreak - 1.1.4.N.zip
Kindle-usbnet- 0.18.N.zip

You would be much better off to use NiLuJe 07-27-2015 (yesterday, 3 years of improvements - including tolerance for the OTA 5.6.x updated).
