There's a long thread around here about PDF, but I can't seem to find it right now.

It's hard because not all PDF's are created the same, but in general I've always gotten the best results by using Acrobat Pro to dump the PDF contents to HTML (assuming it's a text based PDF not image based) or using Mobipocket Creator to dump to HTML. Then create an ePub (and clean up PDF to HTML problems) in Sigil or Calibre editor.

I've used Calibre to convert pdf to epub but it's not very pretty. Extraneous line breaks all over the place for starters. I've use Acrobat Pro to convert PDF to HTML which gives me a lot cleaner starting point when importing the HTML into Sigil to generate the final epub. I've also used an online PDF to HTML converter (PDF2HTML??) when I'm at home and do not have access to Acrobat Pro. Either way, the results are better than Calibre's conversion but not perfect. Though I have to say "adequate and readable" is a good description.

Regards,
David

I would recommend using Koreader to read PDFs in Kobo.
At least you can adjust to width in portrait mode and I find it acceptable to read.
