The Death Factory: A Penn Cage Novella by Barry Award-finalist Greg Iles (SYKM, Wikipedia), is a tie-in short to his titular legal mystery/crime thriller series starring the eponymous Natchez, Mississippi-based prosecutor, this installment acting as a bridge between books #3 and #4 of the series, which apparently form trilogy-arcs within the overarching series aegis, and introduces several new characters who will have parts in the main storyline, free courtesy of publisher HarperCollins' William Morrow Impulse imprint.

This is being made free to promote the upcoming 5th book, which is due later this month.

NB: if you are a strict read-the-series-in-order-to-avoid-spoilers purist, you may want to hold off on reading this novella (or even its blurb) until after the 3rd book, as according to the customer reviews, this directly follows some sort of cliffhanger development and wraps up some threads from that.

Unlikely to cross the pond in any direction, as it seems that this is out from slightly different HC imprints worldwide which are not currently free, though YMMV.

Because substantial-length novella (one of the customer reviews says that it's around 100 pages before the preview chapter excerpt stuff kicks in) which happens to be reasonably plot-relevant to the main storyline, which is being promotionally offered free when they've previously been charging money for it (at £5.99 over @ B&N UK ) to hopefully boost sales rather than one of those glorified chapter preview things, and from a bestselling multiple award-nominated series, to boot.
