Thumbs up Free (nook/Kindle/Kobo/iTunes) Winston Affair [Vintage WWII Military Legal Mystery]

The Winston Affair by the late modern classic novelist Howard Fast (Wikipedia), whom you probably know best in connection with Spartacus, which was the basis of the Hollywood film starring Kirk Douglas, is his vintage 1955 World War II-period courtroom drama cum murder mystery set at a military trial for a US officer who's confessed to murdering a British non-com in a case that rapidly becomes less open-and-shut than it originally seemed, free courtesy of publisher Open Road Media.

This is their selected daily free ebook for November 11th, which also happens to be Howard Fast's 100th birthday, and they have a nice commemorative blurb & video currently up on the front page of their website.

Incidentally, this novel was also made into a film, Man in the Middle (Wikipedia), starring Robert Mitchum.

Currently free, just for one day @ B&N (also in the UK, surprisingly), Kobo & iTunes & Google Play (all available to Canadians), and slated to drop at Amazon sometime after midnight Pacific Time.

If you are interested in getting more of Fast's works at a generous discount price, Open Road Media has also reduced one of his novels to $1.99 (couponable @ Kobo) as part of their month-long New York City Lit sale, A Place in the City, a 1937-published literary fiction novel about the American Dream during the Great Depression: details on their dedicated promo page for all the books in the sale.

And this has been the selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook thread of the day.

Because it's always nice to get commemorative freebies from notable creators courtesy of their publishers on significant anniversaries, especially nifty-looking ones which were adapted to additional media as well (I just have this kink for exploring variations on a theme and comparing originals to transformative works to see if they've managed Adaptation Distillation or how bad the Adaptation Decay turned out to be, to put things in TV Tropes terms).

And they even made it free for the UK this time as well! (Though personally, I think that's probably just a glitch on B&N's part though I'd be happy to be proven wrong if it turns out it pops up on Google or iTunes UK as well.)

Enjoy!

Description
During the Second World War, a military lawyer is embroiled in the toughest case of his career when he must defend a fellow murderous officer

In the midst of World War II, Captain Barney Adams’s superiors call on him with a very unusual request. A troubled US army lieutenant has confessed to murdering a British officer, and Captain Adams has been assigned as his defense attorney. Military court officials want the cleanest possible trial for the lieutenant, and they believe that Captain Adams, a war hero and distinguished lawyer, is the best man for the job. But when Adams begins to investigate the murder, he finds that this seemingly open-and-shut case is actually much more complicated. Before long he is absorbed in a dramatic struggle for a fair trial against the most overwhelming odds.

Thrilling and thought-provoking, The Winston Affair is a powerful portrait of a man torn between the wishes of his superiors and the call for justice.

This ebook features an illustrated biography of Howard Fast including rare photos from the author’s estate.
