Do your books tend to be Mirrors or Windows?

Jacqueline Woodson said books are either Mirrors or Windows.

Quote:
“They’re reflections of who you are or windows into other worlds."
As a kid, my books are initially Windows, but as I grew up, I'm reading books that are Mirroring my experiences.

(However, I do plan on reading more fantasy or sci-fi anytime soon, so I better be on my way back to my windowpane )

Spoiler:

(I wanted to make this a poll but idk how. haha.)

I have to say windows. When I read, I like to get away from reality.

SF&F tends to be mostly Windows which suits me just fine.
I'm used to the conventions and the GUI.

Both, but I tend to enjoy the mirrors more.

I made the conscious choice to expand my reading choices a few years back, when I figured out there was more to the universe than alien worlds. There is, for example, Earth.

I would be inclined to dispute that SF&F are mostly windows. Many offer another way of viewing our own lives/society - a distorted mirror, if you will. To take just one example of which I am a great fan: Terry Pratchett's Discworld. What makes them such a treasure (to me, anyway) is how real the people seem, despite the very definitely fantasy setting.

It seems to me that action-escapism books, whatever the setting, tend to be the most like windows. More character driven books, whatever the setting, tend to be more like mirrors. I don't see it as an either/or thing. To me, many of the very best books are both.

Well said, I couldn't agree more!

One of the reasons Pratchett is one of my favorite authors...

Not really a useful dichotomy ... a pane of glass both transmits and reflects light. An author can frame and light the scene, but how much of their own world the reader sees reflected in the story also depends on how much illumination they bring to their side of the glass.

Mine tend to be mirrors. Mirrors reflecting images of windows. Or maybe windows looking out onto vistas full of mirrors. How about a mirror that has its silver backing getting thin enough in spots that when it's hung in an open doorway, it becomes a bit of a window (from the right angle and in the right light)? Yes, that's it. Definitely mindows. I mean wirrors.

Hmmmm. Funhouse mirrors. I like books that are recognizable reflections of my world, but distorted in interesting ways.

I'm a pretty shallow person so it would suck if they were only mirrors.

Windows when it's dark inside and daylight outside. Mirrors when it is dark outside and the lights are on inside.

Interesting. When I first saw the question I thought of it as a question about whether we tend to read things that reflect our existing beliefs and views, or whether we read things that expose us to new ideas that we might find controversial and possibly disagree with.

I find it fun to read books that "preach to the choir", but much more enlightening (and sometimes frustrating) to read books from the other side. Since I made a major political and religious transformation in my early adulthood, transitioning from the inherited beliefs and views of my parents to the diametrically opposed opposite, I have experience with both sides, yet the old views still feel foreign to me when viewed through that window today.

There was a story in Analog years ago that featured 'Slow Glass' where it took a long time for the view to pass through.

Would 'Fast Glass' show the future
