Paperwhite not letting me downgrade.

Hey guys. I just bought a Paperwhite. I'm into hacking, and I wanna jailbreak this thing. It came with 5.4, so I needed to downgrade. I downloaded 5.3.5 and followed the steps, but its not letting me upgrade the software. The Software button is still grayed out. I drag it into the root folder, and it won't let me upgrade (downgrade) on the kindle. When i plug it back in, the .bin file is gone! Please help, I've tried for a few hours with 5.3.1 and 5.3.5. Still no luck.

It looks like you are trying to downgrade a PW2 to a PW1 firmware...this isn't going to work.

If you are looking to jailbreak a PW2, exciting things just started to happen today. Try here...

Oh, makes sense. Welp, its a ton more complex than i hoped :P Thanks for the thread, I might wait like a week or so and check back to see progress on Kindle's jail breaking team.

Ok, you can be the guinea pig if you want. Try with the attached zip file - unzip it directly into the root of the Kindle, eject Kindle, put it to sleep, wait ~ 3 minutes for the jb to start.

Let me know if it works...
Kudos to yossarian17 for the method.

EDIT: Look here for a clean and packaged jailbreak.

I just ran it on my PW2.
I unzipped it to root, ejected it, put it sleep. in about 2.5min it woke up. pages changed normally. I rebooted it, connected to my pc and I see the following folders:

[folder] .active_content_sandbox
[folder] documents
[hidden folder] system
[file] driveinfo.calibre
[file] jailbreak.sh
[file] jb.sh
[file] metadata.calibre

--inside [hidden folder] system--
[folder].mrch
[folder]acw
[folder]CloudIndices
[folder]fonts
[folder]Search Indexes
[folder]thumbnails
[folder]vocabulary
[file] version.txt

Thank you ixtab!

ok, so...how do I get my screensavers in?

After running this fix from another thread, looks like the jailbreak work. Thank you Thank you!!!!

I have to run to work now, so maybe someone else can jump in if that doesn't work. In any case, it's working in principle, so it will only be a matter of hours or at most days now until everything will run smoothly.

EDIT: Or rather, replace "sh /mnt/us/jailbreak.sh" in jb.sh by "sh /mnt/us/jailbreak.sh forked"

Question This is probably the stupidest question you've heard but....

Where do you place the .xz files? I put them in my root, but nothing happens...

You need to unpack the tar.xz (7 zip will do it on Windows, it's free too) which gives you another tarball which you unpack again and lo and behold, the files are there then proceed as usual with the install.bin

Sill amazed by some people's apparent inability to read instructions pertaining to a device solely made to read... :/

(Not aimed at anyone in particular, just a general remark that I hope never to have to say again each time I do...).
