I have a Kobo touch which I manage with ADE but mostly Calibre
My friend has just bought a Kobo Mini I have lots of free books from smashwords and other sites Is it ok to put them on her Mini through Calibre? Only I don't want to mess up my Calibre and Kobo as only just got them happy together lol Any advice welcome ![]() Last edited by book64; 06-15-2013 at 08:15 AM. |

This is how it seems to work. For books that have drm on them, you have to use the same Kobo account and the same ADE account on both devices to have the drm epubs open on both devices. Kobo has no interest in what you load onto both machines from calibre as we are talking about books without drm. Kobo kepubs have to use the same account to work on both devices, but keep in mind that bookmarks, awards, annotations and deletions for kepub books will ÈspreadÈ through sync to both devices.

Have not seen her Mini yet but I suppose it will be similar to my Touch to use? I will want basically to load some free books I have through calibre then to her Mini. Not through ADE Cant remember when I first installed calibre now what I did But if I just open calibre on my pc and plug the Mini in what should happen? Just worried it will mess my set up As taken me a long long time to sort out calibre lol (Am wading through 2,000 books to add to shelves now) Also if I add them instead through windows explorer what is it I add? The whole book folder from calibre complete with covers ... or just the epub that may not show the cover? Last edited by book64; 06-15-2013 at 08:34 AM. |

If you are using Calibre to transfer books without DRM there will be no issues with plugging in your friend's Mini and transferring the books in the same way you would yours. This will have zero impact on your Calibre set up considering that both readers are Kobos and you don't have to use a different driver. Software on the 2 readers should be virtually identical as far as I know...

As taming said, there won't be any problem. Calibre only knows about the device when it is connected. You plug you Touch in and send the books to it that you want to read. Eject it and then plug your friends Mini in and send books to it.
About the only issue is shelves. If you manage them from calibre for your Touch, the friends Mini will get the same set of shelves. To prevent that, you need to change the driver configuration for shelves. If you want to manually sideload the books, just copy the book files. The rest of the contents of the calibre directories will be ignored if you put them on the Mini. The cover the device shows is the first page of the epub. If you decide to do it manually, I would recommend not copying the books from the calibre directory structure. Select the books in calibre and do a "Save to disk" to somewhere on your computer. Then copy these books to your friends Mini. The reason to do this is that calibre will update the metadata and cover in the books as part of the save to disk. |

Have done a save to disc with a few books to try it out It has saved basically the whole folder for each book the same as in the calibre folder itself. Do I transfer the whole folders or just the epubs out of them to the mini? |

You can prevent the other files by setting a calibre preference. In the preference, go to the "Saving books to disk" page. You probably want to uncheck the "Save covers separately" and "Save metadata in OPF file" options. I recommend keeping "Update metadata in saved copies" checked, but, ave a look at the other options to see if there is anything else you want to change. |

Why do I keep the " update metadata in saved copies"? As will only keep the saved to disc books until passed on. Do you mean for me if i should backup my whole library that way? |

As to backup, that is one way to do it. There is a backup method in the calibre manual, but I haven't looked at it for a while, so don't remember what it is. |

Sorry to complicate this for you, but Mobileread is opposed to piracy. We’ve all assumed that the books you want share are all out of copyright, but some copyrighted books are published without DRM as a convenience to their readers, so the mere lack of DRM does not indicate the right to share them. If any of these eBooks are still covered by copyright then copying them to your friend’s eReader is piracy, depending on where you live, and that’s where it gets complicated.
Publishers still publish books with a notice such as: Copyright 1926 and the name of the copyright holder. At least with eBooks the copyright notice ought to add something like this: Copyright expires: Australia Canada UK US Etc., etc., listing countries where the book is offered for sale. Or even: "Copyright Expired", even if the work was copyrighted in the 18th Century (just to be sure). Your post doesn’t list your country and my knowledge of copyright laws in my own country is limited to a general rule that if it was published before 1923 it’s probably out of copyright and if after 1922 it might be out of copyright. You see my knowledge of copyright is wholly inadequate as are the rules. So far the publishers are no help at clearing the problem up. Last edited by 6charlong; 06-16-2013 at 03:02 PM. |

I was surprised about it as well. It works OK if you use calibre to get the books out of the library to the ereaders or other places. And the driver for the Kobo devices reads the the calibre library rather then the files, so it always uses the current metadata.
