A question about smashwords

I'm completely new to Smashwords. In fact I just created an account at Smashwords.

When I was about to check out an ebook, I saw a box where I could enter a coupon code. Presumably this is for some discount offer.

Could anyone tell me if Smashwords use the same promotional strategy as Fictionwise, a place I do most of my ebook shopping, ie, a discount code would be sent to members on a weekly (or regular) basis? If this is the case, I'll hold back on my purchases until I receive the discount code.

Thanks.

No. Individual authors can create coupon codes which they can then advertise on their websites, etc. No "global" discounts AFAIK.

During 'Read an Ebook Week' (March 4-10) they did have "global" coupon codes for participating authors to discount their books 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%.

Thanks. The books at smashwords aren't expensive anyway.

I mainly use Smashwords as a distribution platform; the site itself doesn't give me many sales. For those authors who have used it, has the coupons feature driven many sales for you? I admit I looked at it when I first joined but have never used it.
