Smashwords question
My book shows no sales, but three downloads. I have not downloaded any copies, and it is priced at $2.99. Can anyone give me an idea what is going on? Thanks...

Depending on when the sale/download is, it might take a bit to trickle down the site.
My CD when it was on CDBaby was like that, if I sold one on iTunes, I wouldn't get paid or register a sale for 3 months because that's when they did their reports, it all depends on when Smashwords releases their reports I would guess. |

The Downloads column on your dashboard shows sample downloads as well as paid downloads. If you click on the hyperlinked number in that column, the page shows you three graphs: visits to the page, downloads from paid customers and sample downloads.
P.S. It's good when people download the free sample -- if they like it, they will return and buy! My total downloads is about 4x the number of sales, but that number also includes the people who paid for it and then downloaded it in its various available formats (epub, pdf, mobi). I'm puzzled. Why would anyone have to download several different formats?

They might have more than one type of reader. If you browse this forum, for instance, you'll find quite a few people who list multiple Devices under their picture.

Also, they may be downloading samples for other people with different readers. It's easier to just grab it and send it to someone than explain to some people what Smashwords is, how to find it, which is the sample, etc.

I have not yet bought a book from them, but downloaded an Epub sample; the content (plot) is fine, but I wasn't thrilled by the formatting. Is it complicated to convert RTF to Epub?

Most readers that have downloaded a sample and now want to buy the book will then directly buy from Amazon, B&N, Sony, etc.
(Many outlets are selling the Smashwords editon, so Smashwords is like a publisher/distributor.) Smashwords is a great way for making available a big sample of our book. Randy |
