Feature Request: Detect internet connection before trying to download a recipe?

Once in a while my Internet connection for my Calibre machine is completely down. When this happens, all of my resulting Epub files are essentially empty - each feed has this error:

urlopen error [Errno 11004] getaddrinfo failed

Since I usually keep only one copy of each recipe, when my internet connection comes back up and syncs my calibre folder with Dropbox, I end up with a bunch of bad files.

Does anyone else think that having Calibre try to detect a valid internet connection before starting a job would be useful? Maybe I'll get my source code set up and try writing another patch...

calibre does detect the presence of an internet connection on windows and linux with network manager. On OS X it doesn't, if you know how to do that, feel free to submit a patch, code in calibre.utils.network

Hmmm - I'll have to play around with it then. This is happening on a Windows 7 box.

Do you know when it checks for the connection? Is it on startup of the app or at the start of each task (recipe download)?
