New Kindle DX not working: DOA?

Today I recieved my replacement Kindle DX Int'l. I unpacked it, took off the plastic sheets and did what it said on the screen: (1) Plug it into a wallcharger and (2) slide the power switch. Nothing happened.
So I thought 'OK, that can happen if the battery is really empty, I'll have to charge it for a while'. But now, after 3 hours of charging, I still can't get it working:
* Power switch: nothing
* Power switch for 40 seconds: nothing
I noticed that after a while (>5 minutes), the power light goes off. If I move the power switch, it goes on again.

I than connected the Kindle to a PC, and there I recieved the message that the 'removable media' is not formatted, and if I wanted to format it now? I did not do this...

I have it charged from a USB-charger, because the US charger won't fit in European sockets. I used the same charger and cable for my (old) Kindle DX before, always with success. Full charge in maybe 2 hours...

Am I overseeing something?

out of box failures while not typical, do happen. I am however interested in you saying the light goes out after a couple of minutes. I have a semi faulty cord that I have learned to live with. try putting the device on a flat surface where the cord will not dangle. watch it for awhile. if the light goes out fairly quickly manipulate the cord a little bit to see if the light comes back on. unless the charging process is substantially different with the DX which I doubt, you should have a yellow light while charging and a green light when charged. it is entirely possible that there is something wrong just inside the charging port. play with your cord a bit to see what happens, then call Kindle customer support. they'll knock your socks off ;o)

Either way, contact Kindle Customer Service. Make sure you call Kindle Customer Service, Amazon Customer Service is not the same thing and sometimes they don't transfer you to Kindle Customer Service.

Just called Amazon. It took a long time (with intercontinental phone fees), but they are shipping again a new DX to me... This time, I have to send it back. But that's ok, since it wasn't working at all...

Yeah, make sure you call Kindle Support (as already stated). They're generally good about getting you back to being a happy camper.

Edit: (Sat in quick-reply too long) - Good that you buzzed them and they're sending you a replacement! Good luck with the new one!
