Hi, I just got my DXG which I bought for reading manga. I been experimenting to see the best way to view manga. After trying out different formats I found out that Mangled(PNG) image and Mangled + PDF converted image had better quality than just unconverted RAW_Manga(JPG).
But I had some issues with both formats like some speech bubble words not clear/dark enough, whitespace aroudn the edge, IMG files shows ghosting, can't do full screen automatically. A guy suggested me to try Duokan and I installed it by following the steps in the site here: http://flip.netzbeben.de/2010/11/duo...h-gui-today/(I installed english version 0.5.13.8689 Beta0224) After I followed the steps it said "Update was not successful" but when my Kindle restarted somehow I could boot to Duokan. After trying Duokan I found that it displays IMG files better than Kindle OS. For example, IMG files could automatically become full screen, trimmed the whitespace at top and bottom but not side ways, the page turning speed had improved and ghosting had disappeared. But with PDF it has actually got worse than on Kindle OS. There was a lot of ghosting everytime the page was turned. Is this a normal thing to expect with Duokan? I thought that Duokan was better than Kindle OS at viewing PDF files? If I could I would rather view manga in PDF in Duokan because it remembers where you left off so I don't have to go hunting everytime. Should I try reinstalling Duokan? Also, if you guys know a better way to view manga on Kindle DXG could you share them with me? I would appreciate it. Thanks ![]() |

I jusy zip the images and placed the zip file in my kindle dx. Works like a charm. Pdf is too heavy and there's no real need to process the images, as the kindle fits them to the screen automatically, if you want.

zips without rescaled images makes the page turns REALLY slow. I find the mangle DX version works pretty well. it was a version that someone aside from the original creator had modified to work with the dx temporarily. It does a much nicer job of improving the look of color converted images, and did a better job of cutting white space (i prefer a bit of white space to none tho).
I'm not sure about the contrast, because out of the massive amounts of manga I've read on this thing, its NEVER been a problem. I hate the fact that pdfs end up shrinking the images, so I never use them. All those things you seem to be bugged about are things that I have never even cared about. I'll just stick to what I have. |

Thanks for the response guys, I'm pretty satisfied with Duokan + unconverted manga zipped in JPG file right now. The good thing is that the manga becomes full screen automatically and the page turn is faster than Kindle OS. The quality issues I had before was gone when I tried reading a higher resolution manga(1185 by 1800). The only advantage of PDF now is the bookmark feauture which is nice but not very important. I still don't know why Kindle OS handles IMG files badly but handles PDF files very well but for Duokan it's the opposite it just can't handle PDF files properly.

not sure if this might help you, but I've solved the ghosting issues I had with Duokan by changing the setting in Pageturn: "Full Refresh(Pages)" to 1 [the default is 6] - no more ghosting at all after that.

Hi!
First post ![]() I'm happily using Duokan 0.5.13.8827 Beta0318 on a Kindle DXG to read Manga. I used to use Mangle (draw frame, no dither) and the Kindle OS but switched to Duokan since it's much faster. 1)I do have a problem with screen refresh - I have a lot of ghosting! I did set "Full Refresh(Pages)" to 1. I can set the value in the menu but it seems to have no effect. I always have to force refresh with "Enter" I don't know if it's related but the date/time on Duokan is 1969 -1-1 and even if I change it to the current date it will reset once I re-enter the settings menu. 2) since I stopped processing in mangle/draw frame most manga I have in Duokan is fullscreen overscan - I can see I loose some image on the sides (some text is missing), I verified this by rotating the picture and sure enough the text was there 3)last but not least since I stopped using Mangle to save time I lost the nice auto rotation on the double page pictures. I guess there's no other way than "alt+g " on duokan - like auto rotate- right? It would be nice to avoid the mangle processing step and just keep transferingpng/jpg on duokan. Thanks and apologies for the wall-o-questions Last edited by aeonian; 04-09-2011 at 03:27 AM. |
