calibre now adds page numbers

The latest version of calibre (7.46) can now generate page numbers (for use with the 3.1 Kindle software)

From the changlog

Kindle driver: Add an option to turn off sending page number information. Also add an option to use a more accurate but slower algorithm to calculate page numbers.

Double click the plugin at;

Preferences, Plugins, Device Interface Plugins, Kindle 2/3 Device Interface

Thanks for this. When I double-click the plugin, it gets greyed out. Do you know if that means it has been enabled or disabled?

Gray = disabled...

Enable it and then click on it once and then click on customize plugin

Keep in mind, these are approximate page numbers, not suitable for citations. For that, follow the standards for location numbers.

(For US readers that's a UK colloquialism which means "the best".)

When Kindle 3.1 firmware announced it was only including page numbers for purchased/ISBN linked books I thought it was good, but not so great for a lot of my books (maybe I should get some more ISBN's entered), so I didn't bother upgrading.

But when I saw the other day that Calibre added approximate page numbers for other books I downloaded and gave it a try. Its great. OK, its not perfect, but its surprising accurate when I tried it for a random book. And even if its not a one for one match for the physical book it doesn't matter. If I could I think I'd rather have screen X out of screen total for the font size I'm using but this is close enough.

The benefit over the locations is that its just easier to 'get' where you are in a book and how large the book is. And for reference, the locations are still there. I like hiding it behind Menu as well, although as someone else mentioned, having the number % moved down onto the same line as the bar would be even better.

I downloaded the new update for Calibre 7.46 yesterday and then converted some books to mobi. to put on my Kindle. I am not getting any page numbers. Can someone tell me what I might be doing wrong.

What version of Kindle firmware are you running? Press Home, then Menu->Settings, and look at the bottom - does it say 3.1 or an earlier version. If earlier, then you can upgrade the firmware at Amazon's firmware page, or wait for it to be pushed to you sometime.

I updated to the 3.1 yesterday also. So I have the latest versions for both the K3 and Calibre. I updated my calibre then I updated the Kindle. I even converted a few books today to see if it made a difference, since I had updated the calibre first, but still no page numbers.

Have you re-sent the books to the device? That's what activates the code for sending the page info file to the Kindle.

I didn't have to re-convert any of them, just re-send and you get 2 files. One is the .mobi file and the other is a .apnx file.

I resent them to my Kindle but no page numbers. These are non-amazon books. They are books I converted from pdf to mobi. Does that make a difference? I thought this was for anybooks, not just ones from amazon. -I am not finding any file apxn.

Go to preferences an select the Plugin for Device Interfaces Plugins and select Kindle 2/3 device interface. Click on Customize Plugin. Make sure that the "send page number information when sending books" is checked.
