Charging Stopped error message

I've had a PRS600 for a year with no problems, but I can't say the same for my new PRS950. The first charge (on Christmas Day) went well, but after only 5 days I have just one "box" left. I doubt that I've had more than 200 page turns, so this battery life is a bit disappointing.

In any case, I decided to charge the unit today and connected to the Reader Library. Nothing. After a few hours of trying various scenarios, I called Sony support. Support guy suggested a soft reset (which I had already tried thanks to info in this forum). We did the soft reset and nothing. Then, he suggested resetting all the defaults after a soft reset. That did the trick until I shut everything down for a while. When I came back to my PC and tried to connect and charge again I got the original problem again.

With a lot of tinkering, I discovered that it would work IF I did a soft reset followed by a default reset followed by turning off the computer, connecting the reader and then turning the computer on again. I uninstalled and reinstalled the software and that helped, but just for that time. Back to the same ole, same ole in later attempts.

Right now, I've got things charging but I'd like to know what's going on. Any guesses?

I'm using a quad core computer with Windows 7 Home Premium and the latest version of Reader software.

Maybe you have a bad unit that needs to be exchanged? With the 950, battery life will be decreased if you have 3G and Wi-fi on all of the time. I typically keep Wi-fi on but 3G off. With those settings I can get at least a week of battery life. Many people keep wireless off entirely. Bottom line your battery life should be close to the advertised specs. I would try charging it in the wall rather than via USB and see if that helps.

What about charging it from an outlet, at least until you can get the PC connection problem figured it out?

The only thing I can think of is, have you been properly ejecting the reader before unplugging it? I've had similar problems with USB devices confusing programs they work with if I don't eject them before removing them.

Hmmm. I just tried the 950 with my husband's computer and it worked just fine. His computer is running Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit. Mine is running 64 bit. Although the sony support site says that Reader Library is supported on 64 bit, I'm wondering if others are experiencing any issues with 64 bit.

Definitely possible, there have been other comments about 64 bit users having problems...

People are experiencing issues with Windows 7 64-bit not recognizing their 950 at all (driver issue it seems). I interpreted your inital post to mean that your computer recognizes your 950 but just isn't charging. Do you have a recognition problem too? Maybe I just misunderstood your post. For those people their 950 works fine on other computers as you reported with your hubby's computer. Other people have no issues at all so it seems to be related to one's specific computer configuration and not a global operating system issue. Nobody has discovered a solution for that problem yet. Maybe somebody else will come along soon and post some more ideas. I'm a Mac user.

Thanks for the help, everyone!

Bookworm_Girl, you've been a big help even though my message was unclear. My computer does not recognize the reader unless I do all the things outlined in my first message. I'm pretty sure this is a 64 bit driver / configuration issue. If I discover anything, I'll report back.
