Refurbs as a Gift
I have a question: How would you feel if you received a refurb Nook as a Christmas gift? The packaging is different and it states that it is a preowned via the sticker(that can be removed) and on the UPC sticker in tiny print. I bought a few of these to give to people, but now I wonder. Would you feel slighted? I just don't want anyone to feel as though I am passing junk to them. Personally, I like the refurbs, a great price and they look absolutely new.
Thanks for any comments, Ellen |

give it to me. I won't complain.
but seriously, some people (but not most) would probably think it diminished the gift. I would disagree. probably something you'll have to decide based on who you're giving it to. I think it is a wonderful and generous gift. And it's not like 100 bucks is chintzy or cheap |

Thanks, In these hard times $ is an issue. So I will base giving on the person's personality. Ellen |

I gave a refurb'd Kindle as a gift......when it arrived, you couldn't tell the difference from a new one, it was pristine.
Even the cords were new and they had the little covers on them. If BN takes the same care with theirs, you should be good. |

Depends on the recipient and maybe occasion. For friends and family members I would have no issue getting or receiving refurbished as a gift in general. I would probably not do so for graduation or wedding gifts though.
My main concern over the B&N nooks as say a Christmas gift, is that they only had a 14 day DOA warranty and other warranty limiting factors, and they would miss out on the early death time under warranty and the time that most bad electronics goes bad. An open tested refurbished gift seems to be going a little too far to me. So I would probably give it to them now, then follow up on Christmas with a small ebook gift certificate to remind them what they got as an early gift. |

I thought that the refurbs come with a warranty. Actually, the way that the Nook is packaged it is easy to charge to make sure it is working. I could use my own charger to do that. Now that you all have weighed in, I feel confident enough to just just the gifts and leave it up to the recipients to take it as they wish. If they don't want it, to H with them. Give it back to me and I can donate them to people who would love to have one. Thanks to all for helping me.

This one: http://www.buy.com/prod/nook-by-barn...217612846.html is refurbished and has: * 90 day complimentary phone support * Unlimited online technical support * One-year limited warranty so regular warranty (I think that's what i got with my new nook nook a while back). As far as your original question I think you're asking the wrong people. Obviously since you're giving them to your friends/relatives that means you know/like them well enough to give them $100 gift, and you should also know if they care if the present is refurbished. So you should consider the gift based on who you're giving in it too, not everyone may like it. |

Honestly, I think you'd have to answer this yourself...based on what you know of your friends.
I've known people who would turn their noses up at refurbished - either because they didn't want "second-hand" or they saw it as being cheap. Those people would be insulted. On the other hand, I think MOST people would be thrilled to get such a great gift...and if they even noticed it was refurbished, they might just be grateful you didn't pay more than they thought you should on them. My brother loves to hit all the Black Friday sales...and he's always saying at Christmas: "Really, I got a GREAT deal on it!" I don't want my relatives going broke buying me gifts. So I think it's great when they can get something extra nice for a good price. |

My position exactly, and I'm happier with an inexpensive item that's actually useful or enjoyable to me than an expensive piece of clutter that doesn't suit my life. Example: when I got married, I was happier with a set of plastic kitchen storage containers (useful to me) than with a delicate piece of very expensive crystal that didn't at all suit our rather casual lifestyle and that I didn't have room to display anyway.
