Fantasy I loved adored the Game of Thrones books but would never in a million years read Harry Potter or Lord Of The Rings. Again I do not do children's books and require real action with adult themes, lots of real violence and you can throw in some sex.
There are a lot of legitimate complaints that can be leveled at LotR -- that it's a "children's book" is not really one of them, IMO. It's 1100 pages and deals with some pretty serious themes. Though I suppose if you automatically define anything that doesn't contain explicit sex and gruesome violence as for children...

It's really not particularly difficult at all.
I read the Hobbit as a child and enjoyed it. Strangely enough I found the Water Babies to be much more disturbing and that is a children's book.

I have not read LOTR I have attempted to watch the movies with no success. Everybody in my house loved the movies and my husband has read the books. They would call it YA. I just found it a yawn. But then I found Harry Potter the same and I did read the first book to my kids. They liked the movies better.
LOTR and Harry Potter are just to child like for my tastes.

I do agree Water Babies was scary stuff, I read that at 7 tho.
