I prefer to think that Pern started out as straight fantasy, and McCaffrey deliberately changed it into SF by introducing a scientific explanation for the dragons. But perhaps that was the plan all along - I don't know.

I do not believe that at all. Most SF cons are very small and I really have not heard about this kind of small mystery cons at all. Mystery cons also are more targeted to professionals.

And from what I have heard mystery cons are usually very different from sf cons. But I would really like to test a mystery con sometimes since I read a lot of mystery/crime. Last edited by tompe; 07-30-2012 at 08:47 AM. |

Yes, I would, too. Likewise I've never been to one.

It was originally fantasy - the prologue establishing it as SF didn't show up until "Weyr Search" & "Dragonrider" were collected (along with "Crack Dust, Black Dust", previously unpublished) into "Dragonflight".

I assume the western and historical people meet at living history, reenactment events and alikes.

How to pick between sci fi and fantasy. I have seen every star trek ep more than once, but would poke my eyes out before reading a book. I demand a more adult theme for my reading. I would love to try a Firefly book.
Fantasy I loved adored the Game of Thrones books but would never in a million years read Harry Potter or Lord Of The Rings. Again I do not do children's books and require real action with adult themes, lots of real violence and you can throw in some sex. Finding adult theme sci fi and fantasy that is not child like themed or dry as old bones is difficult. Now add in the over running of the lists with ikkkkkk paranormal romances. |

Oh, they certainly exist. I have a friend of mine who goes to a couple. (Along with Scifi/fantasy cons.)

Steven Brust wrote one that didn't get picked up by the publishers so he released it for free as fanfic
http://dreamcafe.com/firefly.html We have a copy here as well https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...ighlight=brust Was quite shiny, really had that firefly feel. |
