Isn't Sony sponsoring this venture? I don't really see why they would back something that is only intended to be read online.

I don't think "online reading experience" means you have to read the stuff online. It is a bad turn of phrase to be sure.

I think they mean it is a place to go for anything Harry Potter book/movie related.

Personally, I don't find no top margin an issue at all.

That is not an issue with ADE. It is an issue with how the ePub is made. The ePub has no top margin. So you could add an @page to the CSS to add in a tiny top margin to fit your needs.

I've never read Harry Potter and I believe I would be very happy to pick up the ebooks at Pottermore and get through them one day. I already knew that I couldn't be bothered reading them in paperback, so this is just what I need.

I don't like DRM, but I don't have a problem as much with watermarking - there's less chance of that inconveniencing me as long as it doesn't interrupt the reading experience in any way.

So all of this is yay yay news for me so far. We'll see what happens with cost I guess.

Read them whaha?

I would imagine they'll cost the same as her paperbacks, around $10-$12 if she doesn't get too greedy.

I've been waiting for digital HP since I had to lug around those humongous hardbacks while I was escorting my blind son around a VA hospital. Read all 7 twice in a short time - but did you say read them IN one day? LOL

I'm utterly tickled by the explanation, myself. Why don't they honestly say they don't want to share the profits with Amazon and the rest? It's a fair statement to make.

There are plenty of indie books out there available for "all devices". The author sells on Amazon, on B&N, on Kobo, on Sony, on Smashwords, and -- heck, why not -- on their own website.

The THOU MUST SIDELOAD WHETHER THOU WANTS TO OR NOT approach isn't some magical egalitarian perfect future of online equality, it's not wanting to share a cut with the sellers. And that's fine. But call the pig a pig, not an Elbonian Mail Order Bride.

I don't really understand the comments about how you must sideload. All the ereaders with a browser will probably be able to download the book directly, and the ones that don't were sideloading anyway.

And the profits are going to be shared between Rowling, her publishers and Sony anyway. Going through retailers would just increase the price of the books, by at least 40% if they go with the evil agency model. It's not like the books can only be sold with the help of the retailers.

Do most of them with browsers allow for downloading of files, and of those who do, do they add the files to the library if it is an ebook? Some of the stuff I've seen can't do either.

Yeah, this idea that browser = download ability is not a good assumption. I know from experience that an unrooted Nook Classic most definitely cannot download books directly from the internet, at least not from a Dropbox location.

The unrooted N2 doesn't seem to allow direct downloading, either, from what I've seen in the B&N forum here. At least, I've seen several users say they've tried but been unable to get it to work.

I've not played with the Kindles, so I can't say with them. And, of course, that's surely contingent on a mobi version being offered.

Then, too, there's the website. Even if a device can handle a direct download link, that doesn't mean it'll be that simple on the website. Even something like a pretty drop-down box for format choices can screw up some device browsers.

Nevertheless, even if direct download is an option, it's still essentially a "side-load" in the sense that you're losing device sync options. Which many people care at least as much, if not more about, than not hooking physically to the computer.

Yes, the Kindle can load Mobi books via its browser. It works fine, for example, for the Mobi books in our library here at MR.
