Guys, this isn't a debate on the existance of KFX. The point is: an ereader manufacturer used their own format, looked at the formatting and improved on it. Maybe Kobo out to think about it.

Buddy, line height is a configurable option, unlike the gaps between words, which is Kobo doing a poor job at layout.

Honestly I’m surprised Jon is fighting you on this given how much he likes ragging on kepub and how much it’s broken etc.

I do wonder if the font used plays into the gap you’re seeing. I think an older version of Literata gave me wider gaps than the current one, and lexia dama seems to give even less noticeable ones.

It’s still something kobo should work on whatever the underlying cause is.

Change the justify option to flush left and, gee, no more gaps, a heck of a lot fewer rivers, no more worries about hyphenation. Life is good!

The pictures here use Georgia. Though I do usually use Literata.

I do patch to enable ligatures which is part of the cause. But again: Kobo ought to be able to handle ligatures and properly space words.

How would you go about properly spacing words without adding the code to handle microjustification (and microspacing)? That discussion has been ongoing in these forums for over a decade.

Switch to only audio books and, gee, no more gaps, no rivers, no more worries about hyphenation. Life is... not at all what I'm looking for.

When you can find me an audiobook player that is capable of running at 1000WPM, I might be interested. Otherwise, you are asking me to waste time.

OTOH, Kobo, Kindle, Nook, ereader applications, etc. are all capable of displaying left justified text (except for those braindead programs that think an ebook's CSS is there to be disregarded).

I'm only asking for layout as good as ePub on the Nook (and apparently the Kobo).

I don't want left aligned text. Many (most?) others don't. It is advice that is unhelpful.

Do you really read 1000 word per minute? Not being sarcastic, just wondering.

Kobo has better typesetting with ePub. ePub was not an afterthought. It was there from the start. Amazon could have done the same thing with KF8 that Adobe did you ePub. There is no need for KFX other then new DRM that prevent publishers requesting no DRM from having no DRM.

You seem to have no problem using ePub on the nook. So why not use ePub on the Kobo instead of using the inferior (for typesetting) KePub?
