Thanks above for the Patricia C. Wrede recommendation. Looks like things I'm definitely interested in.

Someone also mentioned upthread that an Amazon customer service rep said they had been overwhelmed by the Open Road traffic, and were adjusting to cope with it (moving to a separate server, IMS...).
I guess I could fault Amazon? or Open Road? for not predicting just how much traffic this sale was likely to generate, and thus some bobbles, but really, I'm not going to complain - this has been an amazing holiday present, and they even made it last for several days, so one wasn't totally out of luck if you had a few other things going on in your life. Like, I was on vacation, and my husband did NOT find it all that amusing that I was waking up early and spending a couple hours each day on the laptop "buying" books before going diving and doing other vacation-like things. (Although I myself think tons of good free ebooks is a pretty nice vacation experience...) |

The only one of hers I've disliked is Wind in the Stone. Definitely don't get that one. Is anyone else wondering how/why ORM is putting on such a huge sale? It's obviously good marketing, but when they do things like putting an entire series out for free or charging for the first book but not subsequent books (I saw this on several series) I wonder what their goal is. I would recommend anything by Patricia C. Wrede (or Caroline Stevermer or Wen Spencer or Lois McMaster Bujold) but the other books are not reprinted by Open Road.

I'll second the Wrede suggestion whole-heartedly, but Wen Spencer and Bujold write very different genres from Wrede and really vary in writing quality. Wrede is consistently excellent, but those two have some great books, some mediocre books

As far as putting an entire series on sale except the first title, well that encourages people to buy at least one book. And I will, eventually, for those that I downloaded. But I don't have to do that just yet, and I believe that Open Road titles are couponable at Kobo. |

Maybe they want a tax write-off? Maybe they want to get you to buy the missing 1st-in-series? ![]() Personally, I'm inclined to think that simple good will is enough for most of us. A large proportion of the SFnal stuff I picked up I already owned either from back when the bulk of ORM's sf/f imprint was ported from e-Reads who used to be on Fictionwise, or their newer backlist acquisitions. And a lot of the stuff being given away is fairly obscure-ish titles/authors who've kind of fallen out of favour in the mainstream, and if even just a fraction of the people who picked up the freebies end up reading and reviewing a few of them on Amazon or elsewhere, then that gives them a lasting publicity boost for their backlist. Going through the listings, I noticed a lot interesting new-to-me things and/or reprints of works which I hadn't thought would get e-bookized anytime soon, which are going on the wishlist for a future sale. Similarly, when looking at the other-category authors I'd never heard of before, many of them looked to have several non-free works which seemed like they could be things I'd want to read, which will also go on the wishlist for a future purchase if I try and enjoy the offered freebie. I've liked ORM for years because they don't just focus on the current trendy bestsellers or supposedly enduring classics, but also brought back into print some fairly obscure stuff by established authors (viz. all the long OOP poetry and essay collections by mid-20th C novelists when they could have easily gotten away with just reprinting the most famous works), and regularly had $1.99-$2.99 sales on them. They could have kept just offering their daily public domain freebie and the sporadic special giveaway from their non-PD catalogue, and the daily discount deals, and I'd have kept saying nice things about them anyway. As it is, I'm very thankful for this bonanza (literally almost half their catalogue, BTW, or 44.67%, to be precise) which has already pointed me in the direction of a lot of books that I'm interested in and didn't know about before, and be more than happy to continue singing their praises and recommending their books, which may very well be the point of the exercise. ![]() |

Me too...that is why I was so convinced at first that it must be a pricing glitch.
I have noticed that some of the mystery authors I would expect to be among their most popular (Ellis Peters, Catherine Aird, Anne Perry, Richard/Frances Lockridge come to mind) don't have any free titles. But there are some others I would think would be equally or more popular (Richard Prather, Susan Dunlap, Howard Fast/EV Cunningham, etc.) whose titles are mostly or all free. And, what is the impact on the authors whose titles have been given away - both short and long term, especially when, as mentioned below, the whole series is free and not just a few? Not complaining though! |

This current promo might be giving away most of the series, but it's only to a selected population of Gentle Readers for a limited time. OTOH, good word of mouth will probably last much longer, and reach a far greater audience who might be persuaded to invest the $$$ for the entire set than those of us inveterate freebie-grabbers who hang out in ebook discussion forums and will only have to buy a couple of titles to fill. |

Wow! Open Road decides to give away a ton of free books and some people are annoyed by them? I have no words....
All I have to say. Is thank you so much! Open Road your generosity has really made a crummy Holiday season brighter. I had fun one clicking all those romances. It's been sooooo long since any publisher had done anything like this. Last one comes to mind was Dorchester many years ago. I picked up several good authors and some new ones. ![]() Sent from my Nexus 7 |

I got most SF/F and Mystery/Thriller that Open Road made free. Some are Mobi, but for free, I can convert and edit as needed.
