A good chunk (or maybe all) of Howard Fast's Masao Masuto police procedural mystery series is also free. IMS, this series was originally published under the pen name E. V. Cunningham. I haven't read since DTB days, but they reminded me a bit of John Ball's Virgil Tibbs series, in that the protagonist in each is a minority detective (Asian, in this case) back in the days when it wasn't very unacceptable to be openly racist. Anyway, I remember reading and enjoying a long time ago, and am looking forward to re-reading at some point as I work my way through a few hundred new titles just added to my TBR pile.

Although I mostly read mysteries, I do also enjoy non-fiction, and have enjoyed a couple of titles by Ernle Bradford. (Yes, the spelling of Ernle is correct...not Ernie...) I've very much enjoyed his book about the Ottoman siege of Malta (sadly not free in this giveaway, although drops to $1.99 pretty regularly), and also his book about Gibraltar, which is free now. My husband, who is much pickier than I am, also enjoyed the Malta book (hasn't read the Gibraltar one). Anyway, several of Bradford's other books are also free in the sale, and may be worth a look if you like this sort of thing.

Some other mysteries...depending of course on your personal tastes for sub-genre, writing style, etc...

I've read and enjoyed at least one title in each of these series or by each of these authors, but YMMV.

Jane Dentinger's Jocelyn O'Rourke theater themed series
all three of Susan Dunlap's series
Brian Fremantle's Charlie Muffin series
most of Jacqueline Girdner's Kate Jasper series
a few John Dickson Carr titles
L. A. Morse's Sam Hunter titles
a bunch of Dorothy Salisbury Davis titles
the second, but not the first, of Harriet Hahn's James the Cat series (I've read the first and enjoyed, so this works for me...)
some of the Benny Cooperman series by Howard Engel

I am just the opposite...I've picked up a lot of the mysteries - any recommendations, beyond those already mentioned, for sci-fi?

All 7 in the series are free. A good portion of Howard Fast's other books are also free.

I think the freebies were all restored after the mess, so they should be free again. I think the only one totally missing in the series is #14, which isn't available anywhere, as far as I know. A few of them aren't free, but the rest are, so I was more than happy to pay for the others. I'm really, really looking forward to reading these.

Of all times to be away from MobileRead for a couple of days. A number of my favourite sci-fi/fantasy authors are with Open Road these days. Of course, for all I know I wouldn't have been able to take advantage being in Canada, but it would have been nice to find out...
