Apple invented many bits of the GUI user interface, including (but not limited to) the menu bar and drop-down menus, overlapping windows, and direct manipulation of icons.

When it comes to mobile devices Apple doesn't cater to the needs of the few, but the needs of the many. If their market research tells them that only a couple of million customers want a 7" iPad, it's not worth it for them to make one. It's not that they can't make a profit on a device this size, it's that for them it looks bad if they make a mobile device that only a couple of million customers want. |

As a person who carried his Newton MessagePad until replacing it w/ a Sony PRS-505 (and a paper notepad) and who is now using a Sony PRS-600, the problem w/ units that size is that they're not pocketable --- but not large enough to justify carrying a separate bag.
I addressed this by having shirts tailor-made w/ pockets large enough to hold my Newton, and still have some of the older Travelsmith shirts w/ pockets large enough for the Sony units (sans case). William |

What made Jobs such an extraordinary innovator was that he wasn't really concerned with what people thought they wanted. He was going to show you what you wanted and explain to you why you wanted it. The iPad is a perfect example. When Apple announced it, many in the tech world dismissed it (Paul Thurrott at Windows IT Pro was a good example). It was just an iPod Touch on steroids. Nobody cared about tablets, they had been around for years and had never taken off. It was Jobs who understood that a simple device that could be a content consumer while also handling everyday functions like email, calendar and such (and actually replace a PC for many people) would make a lot of folks want it. And he did make lots of folks want it. |

I actually think I could go without a computer and just work on a tablet. It has been ages since I needed a Microsoft document of any sort. I am finding it is easy enought o check and write email on the IPad. The internet works fine and I am enjoying playing Ticket To Ride, Settlers of Catan, Tikal, and other games on the IPad.

It's not just a matter of what the consumer wants, but rather understanding where the sweet spot of:
- device with a useful function - technology able to make the device workable enough for people to be willing to buy it - interface simple enough for people to be willing to use it The Newton had the first and last, but Jobs understood that battery and processing power were far more important than other considerations, so held off on the iPad (which was the initial design) and did the iPhone instead (which has captured a significant share of the $1 trillion market in personal communicators John Sculley predicted), since they could manage a workable battery life for the smaller device. |

The truth is that many people don't need the processing power that a desktop delivers, and the rest is just a matter of the screen size. While there were tablets around before the iPad, the problem was the OS. Windows tablets still haven't taken off. |
