They don't have to compete on price. The Apple aficionados would buy it for the regular price, but if they needed an excuse, they could just say they didn't expect to have the same volume for the 7" product.

(I hope "Apple aficionado" isn't considered name calling.)
$499 for a 7" locked-down fondleslab would be highway robbery (you can buy a 10" Transformer 300 for $379, with 1GB RAM and Quad-core Tegra III), but it would probably still sell to a select few. Even the Sammy 7.7 Tab Plus is "only" $449, but comes with a modem.

You have got the wrong set of glasses on. You need the glasses with the Apple Red tint, and then it would be a great thing.

Women could carry the $499 7" iPad in their purses. Frenchmen and other fashionistas could carry the 7" iPad in their man-purses. Other men could carry it in their inside jacket pockets.

afv011, you need to move away from the simplistic droid world that worries about "bang for buck" and other overly narrowed economical and ergonomic viewpoints.

We are talking "Apple."

I know, right? Every morning, there's always a scattering of small parts on the floor, and new scuffs on my electronics. It's like a tech Fight Club, with the Apple gang taking on the Kindle Faction and HP. Sony hides under the sofa.

Its great for the user.

I don't bother with the dog and cock fights anymore. The tech wars are where the action is.

The first thing that they could worry about is the fact that making a 7" iPad would be like saying that Steve Jobs was wrong. I don't think that the new management is at that point yet.

Then you have this:
Quote:
Chief executive Tim Cook said the idea of combining the iPad and MacBook Air would "wind up compromising" both.
I was saying that they would have the same perspective on making something between an iPhone and an iPad.

Everyone has points as to why a 7" iPad would bring about seemingly conflicts.

Yes Jobs said so and so. --but time has passed, and Jobs changed his mind occasionally as well.
Yes a $499 or even a $450 7" iPad would have to have a pricing explanation. -- ("simply we don't expect the volume of the most wonderful and heavenly magical 9.7" iPad".)
Yes, there might be competition with the 9.7" iPad or the iPod or the iPhone, but we will still make out profit if not more at $499 or even $450.

The BIGGIE point for doing it is that those upstart despicable turf busting and patent violating DROID companies are stealing some of our thunder in the 7" market. -- Set the Fab Factories and the Foundries to work. We will show those upstarts who the King of the Range is! COMPETITION!.

I don't see why Apple wouldn't come out with a 7" iPad. The two sizes appeal to different markets, and Apple can always get their premium price for the quality of the fit and finish.

There is a difference between someone saying that they were wrong and saying that their former boss who died only half a year ago was wrong.

Actually at this price the argument would have to be: we don't expect to get even a fraction of the sales numbers of the initial iPad.

Can you point to a source that explicitly details that the Xerox tour included the right to use any ideas seen therein? All I can find is the option to buy stock, pre-IPO so it was worthless at the time, for a tour.

Even if they paid for it, they still didn't invent it. Apple simply capitalized on somebody else's work. (Which is what Apple has done virtually their entire corporate history.)

Can you point to an independent, unbiased and reliable source that says they didn't have the right to use them, that Xerox didn't let them, that Xerox benefitted in no way?

Gosh and nobody else does that... when Gates promised IBM their OS he had to buy it in from its inventor... and the list goes on... and on... and on... It's common practice for every tech company (hardware or soft) to capitalise on somebody else's work... often because they have a better way to employ it... which just might give a better business product... so what?

Get over it and find a real reason to kick Apple or whatever other company becomes the scapegoat of the day (or thread)... there's plenty of targets out there if you've nothing better to do...

A company doesn't have to invent everything. Still, look at the $2500 Mac and the $15,000 Xerox Star. Apple did quite a bit of innovating on their own.
