$4.99 -- The Devil's Pleasure Palace -- Michael Walsh/ Michael Walsh --> 8.4 hrs/ R-4.4 --> politics

Quote:
The Devil's Pleasure Palace: The Cult of Critical Theory and the Subversion of the West

Whispersync: the Audible book is $4.99, if you own or borrow the Kindle ebook ($2.99)

In the aftermath of World War II, America stood alone as the world's premier military power. Yet its martial confidence contrasted vividly with its sense of cultural inferiority. Still looking to a defeated and dispirited Europe for intellectual and artistic guidance, burgeoning transnational elite in New York and Washington embraced not only the war's refugees but many of their ideas as well, and nothing has proven more pernicious than those of the Frankfurt School and its reactionary philosophy of "critical theory". At once overly intellectualized and emotionally juvenile, critical theory - like Pandora's box - released a horde of demons into the American psyche. When everything could be questioned, nothing could be real, and the muscular, confident empiricism that had just won the war gave way, in less than a generation, to a Central European nihilism celebrated on college campuses across the United States. In The Devil's Pleasure Palace, Michael Walsh looks at how critical theory took root in America and came to affect nearly every aspect of American life and society - and what can be done to stop it.

I use the Downpour app a lot. I've run into the stopping problem also, but I've found that if I hit the button to go back a chapter and then the forward chapter button (it might take two jumps), it will resume. It's faster than restarting the phone, which was my initial fix.

The Audible app on my iPod Touch crashes every time I launch it, then works the second launch, so I don't favor one experience over the other!

Thanks for the tip. I hate it when I have to use a specific app instead of my Clip Sport.

I like apps for non-fiction, because I like to goose up the speed a bit.

It's too bad that there is not a Swiss Army knife program/app that you can use to play anything from anyone.

Or is there such a thing?

I think that I'd . . . gulp . . . actually pay money for one of those.

The Downpour app would be fine if it didn't keep stopping. At least it shows chapters and their times. The Hoopla app doesn't crash, but it's one long file--you never know where you are.

Oops

I use a template for these offers and forgot to change the author and narrator. I'll make the changes forthwith (monkey using a big word here to expand his Tarzan-limited vocabulary)

Tantor -- Free Audiobook -- exp unknown

FREE -- The Naval War of 1812 -- T Roosevelt/ Paul Costanzo --> 16.0 hrs/ R-3.4 --> military
Quote:
Praised for its scholarship, assurance, and originality, this classic naval history by Theodore Roosevelt offers stirring and comprehensive accounts of the war's dramatic naval battles and of the American and English commanders who fought on the vast North American lakes and on the ocean for control of the continent.

Published when Theodore Roosevelt was only twenty-three years old, The Naval War of 1812 was immediately hailed as a literary and scholarly triumph, and it is still considered the definitive book on the subject. It caused considerable controversy for its bold refutation of earlier accounts of the war, but its brilliant analysis and balanced tone left critics floundering, changed the course of U.S. military history by renewing interest in our obsolete forces, and set the young author and political hopeful on a path to greatness.

Roosevelt's inimitable style and robust narrative make The Naval War of 1812 enthralling, illuminating, and utterly essential to every armchair historian.

Awesome find.

The book itself is almost certainly in the public domain, but that doesn't mean that you can get a free audiobook of it with good narration just anytime that you want to. The narrator for this audio is professional, and a very good one IMHO.

A note for my fellow MobileReaders who are Europeans . . . . you may not recognize "War of 1812." It was fought between the United States and Great Britain. If I'm not mistaken, Europe does not consider this as a separate war from the one going on on the Continent at the time involving Napoleon. It was just an American theater in that war.

I got an email about the sale, but I couldn't find a straightforward way to find the $6.99 downloads from among all of the other titles. So, I gave up looking. I notice that you applied filters to find them. (For some reason, I didn't think of that. ) I think that I'll find several that I want from among the offerings, now. Thanks.

The Mantle of Command, by Nigel Hamilton is a $2.99 Kindle mobi right now. The Whispersync narration is $4.99. So the WS deal is only $7.98. It might be worth 99 cents to someone to go with Amazon/Audible and get the ebook (sync'd with the audio) in addition to the audio, over paying $6.99 at Tantor to get the audio alone.

YW - Tantor certainly doesn't make it easy. At least they have filters to narrow things down.
