Like I said before, while I'm of the same opinion as you in this matter (i.e. I don't buy digital content that I can't backup and format switch), we are very much in the minority when it comes to people who buy ebooks. We are probably a more important piece of the market for the mid tier authors, but most people are totally oblivious to DRM. If they have a kindle, then they buy from Amazon. If they have a Nook, they buy from B&N. If they have an iPad, they buy from Apple. The more sophisticated might buy Amazon books on the website and then download onto their kindle app on the iPad.

Yes, and as it always is, the ignorance will catch up and bite them in the behind, somewhere down the line.

DRM is out of control, yet some publishers are waking up to going DRM-free like Baen and Tor. I look for DRM-free books when I purchase, and get DRMed books via the library/Overdrive. What really offends me is publishers blocking text-to-speech, that seems unconscionable as it can be a very important feature for vision impaired people. That is a pure-greed move as they want to sell the more expensive audio book. Some people prefer text-to-speech vs audio book.

I don't know. Many, many people only read a book once and then never read it again. From that point of view, once they have read it, it really doesn't matter if the book disappears in five years or not. They just want something to keep them amused on a plane ride or a vacation to the beach. According to a pew research survey published in October, half of all people who have read a book this year, read 4 or fewer books. The mean is 12 books, which mean that the high end (like people here) read a lot of books.

That Pew research study was less than 100 carefully selected people.
Though on my fluff reading, it doesn't matter.

The history was that authors rather than publishers demanded the right to forbid TTS (audio books were just taking off with downloaded MP3 rather than armfuls of cassettes). And US law allows DRM to be broken in aid of the registered vision impaired.

Really? I didn't know authors had the right to complain...

Of course, the legality of DeDRM for the vision-impaired does little good if the publishers get their way and make DeDRM tools illegal to distribute.

You are correct, that 'bastion of freedom' the Author's Guild fought against text-to-speech. Authors and publishers have the right to disable it on the ebooks at Amazon. There is no good reason for it to be disabled, nor should vision impaired and other readers have to break DRM to use it. I imagine it could be quite a challenge for a vision impaired individual to break the DRM of an ebook to begin with

Excellent point. It does no good to say vision impaired people are free to break DRM for TTS on one hand while making illegal the ability to do so on the other hand. But Common Sense has never had anything to do with U.S. copyright law.

Except it is factually incorrect to say that "authors rather than publishers demanded the right to forbid TTS" based on what the Guild of Publishers' Mouthpieces do.

If they don't represent authors the rest of the time, why should we assume they are representing authors this time?

LOL. Publishers pay to get DRM in. Amazon puts it in, and then pays someone else to take it out again.

Net result: Publishers pay Alf to NOT provide DRM

Assuming you're talking about commercial ebooks, rather than public domain ones, the answer is that only thieving scum steal books, and we (and you) are not of that ilk.

I notice Louis L'Amour ebooks have it disabled, I'm sure that is Bantam rather than the author, who happens to be dead, or his heirs making that choice, though I could be wrong.

Judging by the other thread, the free books in question are library ebooks and the question about how to get them on the preferred reading device which, alas, is not always possible:
