Amazon and Kobo provide apps to let you read their ebooks on iOS, Windows, Android and MacOS.
apple lets you read...on Apple. And even MacOS is recent. everybody can spend their money however they want but I'm not going to pay money for software, or do screenshot workarounds, just to accomodate their agenda when I can instead use my money to buy books from someone who tries to accomodate me. I'm the customer: so you cater to me, I don't cater to you. ![]() |

As far as not being able to find it on google, when I put in the search that I posted earlier, the 4th link was to a youtube video entitled How to Remove DRM from iTunes iBooks. The second one goes to the quora site and ask the question Is it possible to remove DRM from books purchased in the iBooks store. The first answer talks about Requiem, the second answer talks about the company that I use. |

So whose fault is it iBooks isn't available on Android? Windows? BlackBerry? Browsers? The point being made is that Amazon has ensured that their books can be read on just about any device out there. Why has Apple not done the same?

None of that has anything to do with Amazon since Kobo is the same as Amazon. And google is, mostly. Nook used to do it before their death spiral. Oyster and Scribd, too. Everybody else in ebooks tries to be multiplatform via apps. |

Being multiplatform is something Apple is not known for. One of the very few Apple applications I know of that runs outside the Mac ecosystem is iTunes. Safari for Windows has been discontinued. Everything else, such as Logic, Aperture (which has been discontinued), iBooks, Garageband, Final Cut Pro and many others don't exist for Windows.
It's impossible to write iPhone apps on a Winidows computer, but you can write Android apps on Windows, Linux and Mac. Microsoft has said that as of Windows 10, it would be(come) possible to run iPhone apps directly on Windows. A lot of Microsoft's software is available for the Mac, but not the other way around. They also continuously try to push non-standard interfaces and cajole other companies (mainly Intel) intto helping them with design. Thunderbolt? Meh. I've never seen a Thunderbolt device in the wild. Why not? Because they're three times as expensive as a comparable USB 3 device. Maybe Thunderbolt 3 will be worth it, now that it also runs over the USB-C connector. Still more expensive, though. Firewire? Someone not on a Mac ever used that? They're the only company that still creates smartphones that don't charge through micro-USB, AFAIK. Now they want to even drop the 3.5" jack and integrate it into the Lightning connector, so the iPhone can become 0.6mm thinner. If there is one company that suffers from "not invented here"-syndrome, it's Apple. IMHO, you're not smart if you buy into the Apple ecosystem, because you can't ever buy anything else anymore. If you want OSX or iOS, there is only one manufacturer creating hardware on which it runs, and if they create something you don't like, you're just stuck with your old device. If you switch to a different device, you'll have to buy all your software again; if you bought media, it's entirely possible that you can't even take that with you. Microsoft may often be rantworthy, bit at least, if DELL starts making laptops with a triangular screen and hexagonal keyboards, I can switch to a different manufacturer but still use the same software. With Apple, one just has to take what's offered and shut up, or drop everything and start over. Last edited by Katsunami; 01-17-2016 at 05:06 PM. |

As long as you don't post direct links to DRM removal tool downloads, or give detailed instructions on how to use them, you won't run afoul of MR rules. There's nothing stopping you from mentioning the name of software you use. Case in point: people have already mentioned Requiem and Alf's Tools in this thread. You mentioning the name of the sofware you use would be no different. Don't overthink it.

As for the rest, if you don't want to buy from Apple, then don't. No need to justify it. Apple is a hardware company that also sells content. Their focus is on their hardware. Amazon is a content store company that also sells hardware. Their focus is on their content store. That's why, for the most part, I buy ebooks from Amazon. They have a better selection and I've gotten into the habit of buying from them. |
