Quote:
The chief inspector in the Ghana police force investigates a gold miner’s death in this “atmospheric” mystery set in West Africa (Entertainment Weekly).

“Fans of The #1 Ladies’ Detective Agency may have a new hero: Detective Inspector Darko Dawson.” —The Wall Street Journal

Darko Dawson has just been promoted to chief inspector in the Ghana police service—and it even comes with a (rather modest) salary bump. But he doesn’t have much time to celebrate, because his new boss is transferring him from Accra, Ghana’s capital, out to remote Obuasi in the Ashanti region, an area notorious for the illegal exploitation of its gold mines.

When Dawson arrives at the Obuasi headquarters, he finds it in complete disarray. The office is a mess of uncatalogued evidence and cold case files, morale is low, and discipline among officers is lax. Then, on only his second day on the job, the body of a Chinese mine owner is unearthed in his own gold quarry. As Dawson investigates the case, he quickly learns how dangerous it is to pursue justice in this kingdom of illegal gold mines, where the worst offenders have so much money they have no fear of the law.

Chosen for Entertainment Weekly’s “Must List,” Gold of Our Fathers is “exceptional . . . A window into another culture” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).

Robert Goldsborough is pretty well known for his excellent (IMO) and long-running continuation of Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe/Archie Goodwin series. But he also has his own shorter series, featuring a journalist, Steve “Snap” Malek. And now the first book in that series is on sale in the US...

Three Strikes You're Dead, Snap Malek #1
Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B8MMGB5J
Kobo US (discountable): https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/thr...-you-re-dead-3

Spoiler:
Quote:
In this depression-era noir series debut, a politician’s murder leads a Chicago crime reporter to a conspiracy involving the Cubs’ race for the pennant.

Chicago, 1938. A new mayoral candidate runs on a promise to stomp out organized crime. When he’s gunned down, it seems clear that the mob cast their ballot with bullets. But Chicago Tribune reporter Steve “Snap” Malek senses more to the story. And his hunch is confirmed by none other than former syndicate kingpin Al Capone.

Incurring his editors’ anger, Malek ranges far beyond his beat, plunging headlong into a maverick investigation that soon spins beyond his control. In the process, he crosses paths with actress Helen Hayes, future Mayor Richard J. Daley, and pitching great Dizzy Dean, who was recently traded to the Cubs. And while Dizzy may be essential to a Cubs pennant win, he may also be the key to Malek’s very survival.

Vicious Circle by CJ Box is the seventeenth Joe Pickett book. It's $1.99 in the US today, as part of today's Kindle Daily Deal, and price-matched at Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HYUVHIM

Spoiler:
Quote:
The past comes back to haunt game warden Joe Pickett and his family with devastating effect in this thrilling novel from #1 New York Times–bestselling author C. J. Box.

The plane circled in the dark. Joe Pickett could just make out down below a figure in the snow and timber, and then three other figures closing in. There was nothing he could do about it. And Joe knew that he might be their next target.

The Cates family had always been a bad lot. Game warden Joe Pickett had been able to strike a fierce blow against them when the life of his daughter April had been endangered, but he’d always wondered if there’d be a day of reckoning. He’s not wondering any longer. Joe knows they’re coming after him and his family now. He has his friend Nate by his side, but will that be enough this time? All he can do is prepare...and wait for them to make the first move.

Several years later, Betrayal of Trust is $1.99 again in the US. It goes on sale pretty often at higher prices, but $1.99 is rare, so grab it if you want it!

Mrs Pollifax and the Whirling Dervish is the ninth in Dorothy Gilman's Mrs Pollifax series. As I've mentioned before, I think the earlier ones are a bit better, but I've liked most of this cozy series (which occasionally has a little timely bite to it - although the bites are a few decades old by now). Dervish has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B083RZFXPV
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/mrs...ling-dervish-1

Spoiler:
Quote:
Mrs. Pollifax is on hand in Morocco to back up an inept CIA agent, and it's a good thing. Their first informant is killed, and Mrs. Pollifax begins to get the idea that her colleague is not who he says he is. Still, she forges ahead, checking out suspicious informants, and coming to the conclusion that someone is an imposter and someone wants her dead....

I've read and liked all of Alice Duncan's Daisy Gumm Majesty series, although I probably have a little personal bias, since I spent many years in Pasadena, California, where it's set. It is mostly a cozy series, but there is usually a more serious issue somewhere in each - PTSD, or racism, or date rape - not that these issues were called that then, or even acknowledged then. And right now, if you want to give the series a try, there is an omnibus of the first three books on sale at Kindle US for $0.99. It includes: Strong Spirits, Fine Spirits, and High Spirits.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B6H2YQQ

Spoiler:
Quote:
From award-winning, bestselling author Alice Duncan comes the very first Daisy Gumm Majesty Cozy Mystery Boxset that "teems with period detail and characters who make it so enjoyable... especially effervescent Daisy." ~Booklist

It's the 1920s and Daisy Gumm Majesty is doing her part to support her family as a medium by holding séances and interpreting tarot cards for the rich and famous.

STRONG SPIRITS: When the wealthy Mrs. Kincaid comes to Daisy to help solve her husband's disappearance, Detective Sam Rotondo isn't fooled by Daisy's choice of "vocation". Then Daisy reads Sam's cards... and the tables turn on them both.

FINE SPIRITS: When Daisy is approached by Mrs. Bissel about exorcizing a ghost from her basement, Daisy is tempted to back out until Mrs. B puts up one of her famous dachshund puppies as payment. Hoping Mrs. Bissel’s basement ghost is not a skunk, Daisy begins snooping only to discover the matter is much larger than anyone imagined.

HIGH SPIRITS: Daisy’s talent as a "medium" has caught the attention of dangerous mobster Vicenzo Maggiori, who wants to get in touch with his dead godfather. Then Daisy’s troubles are doubled when Detective Sam Rotondo tells her she must channel the spirits for Maggiori and pass the information to him in exchange for his silence.

Many thanks, that's one I didn't have yet! And while I was at it, checked my Kindle Rewards and points from my credit card and was able to get numbers 8 and 10 for free, so only a few more to go, then I'll have a nice re-read of the entire series, which I remember fondly.

I’m actually doing Joffe’s Free Friday book on Friday this week! Woo-hoo!

So…this weekend’s book is The List, which is the first in Michael Leese’s Detective Martha Munro series.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09NRXNPXX
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09NRXNPXX

Spoiler:
Quote:
It was just an ordinary Wednesday lunchtime when Detective Martha Munro’s life changed forever.

Her sergeant is speaking, but she barely hears what he’s telling her.

Your mother has been shot dead. Your four-year-old daughter has been taken.

There are no leads. Who would want to hurt her family?

Martha realizes it’s time to ask herself some hard questions about her late father.

He led the anti-corruption squad at Scotland Yard. It’s rumoured he kept a list of everyone who worked for him, from coppers to criminals. And just being on the list was a sure-fire way to lower your life expectancy.

Her mother was killed by someone trying to get their hands on the list. Now time is running out for Martha to get her daughter back alive.

Family is EVERYTHING. And she will do ANYTHING to keep them safe.

I don't know how long this search will be good for, but it's full of free Joffe books. If the search stops working, just do a search from the Kindle Store for Joffe Books.
