Ngaio Marsh 99p my recommendations
My favourites of this group are "Artists in Crime" and "Clutch of Constables" mainly because they feature the artist Agatha Troy, whom Alleyn meets for the first time in "Artists". While I enjoyed (and own) them all, my absolute favourites are "Death in a White Tie", "Death and the Dancing Footman" and "Black As He's Painted". My two cents...

My favorite, although not part of this sale, is Surfeit of Lampreys, apa Death of a Peer, which makes me laugh enough that I can't read it around other folks...

I agree about reading them in order if possible - Alleyn and Troy's relationship definitely develops over the series. I also agree about 'Surfeit of Lampreys', made more delightful because of the supposed genuineness/reality of the characters (as hinted at in the autobiography, which is BORING! Too long and tells us nothing of interest as to Marsh's character).
But perhaps the most fun is 'Scales of Justice', unfortunately not in that list either. When a solution to a plot relies on the "wrong type of fish scales" you can be sure that Agatha Christie had a real competitor in Ngaio Marsh! |

Mrs. Roosevelt's Confidante is the 5th in the Maggie Hope series by Susan Elia Macneal, and was a finalist for a couple of awards. I've read and enjoyed several of the titles in this series. Confidante has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US. The titles in this series are usually over $10, so if you are working your way through the series, or otherwise think you might want it, you might grab it now!

Bargain @ $2.99 from Grand Central Publishing in Canada & the US (price should be the same at all the usual retailers):
The Lost Woman by award-winning Danish author Sara Blædel (SYKM, Wikipedia), 9th in her Louise Rick series starring an Inspector in Copenhagen who handles missing persons cases. This is the very latest to become available, translated just this year, and it looks as though all but the 1st are also slated to appear in English translation with the missing books filled in next year. Following the incredible success of Sara Blaedel's #1 international bestsellers The Forgotten Girls and The Killing Forest*, Louise Rick--head of the police department's elite Special Search Agency charged with missing persons cases--returns in Sara's latest twist-filled suspense novel...* A housewife is the target of a shocking, methodical killing. Shot with a hunting rifle through her kitchen window, the woman is dead before she hits the ground. Though murdered in England, it turns out that the woman, Sofie Parker, is actually a Danish citizen who's been on the Missing Persons list for almost two decades--so Louise Rick is called on to the case. Then, in an unexpected twist, the police discover that Sofie had been reported missing eighteen years ago by none other than Eik, Louise Rick's police colleague and lover. Impulsive as ever, Eik rushes to England, and ends up in jail on suspicion of Sofie's murder. Completely blindsided by Eik's connection to the case, Louise is thoroughly unsettled and sick with worry, yet she must set aside her own emotional turmoil if she hopes to find the killer in what will become her most controversial case yet... |

Thanks to everyone who gave input on Ngaio Marsh's books. I found many of them available at the Free Library of Philadelphia. I was able to start at the beginning with A Man Lay Dead; now I'm working my way through the chronological list, looking forward to the favorites mentioned by MR members.

Bargain @ $1.99 each from Amazon's exclusive AmazonCrossing translation imprint in Canada & the US:
The Last Pilgrim & Hell is Open by Norwegian author Gard Sveen (Wikipedia), 1st & 2nd in his Tommy Bergmann series starring a policeman in Oslo. The 1st book won four prizes, including the prestigious Glass Key and Riverton prizes for Scandinavian crime writing. I've read the 1st one, and thought that overall it was a pretty good modern murder/cold case mystery/thriller of the sort that ties in a present-day and historical case (the obligatory WWII mystery, of course), and the 2nd was on my wishlist and this is the first time I've seen it pricedrop. Icelandic author Árni Thórarinsson's (SYKM, Wikipedia) Season of the Witch, which I read and quite liked, is also on sale again. It's the 4th in his Einar series starring a newspaper journalist (and contains some entertaining skewering of the media, if you're into that sort of thing), but apparently the only one which will be translated into English, sadly (all but the first 3 or so are available in French). The case, which is set in the mildly unusual location of Akureyri, Iceland's 2nd largest city (with a tiny population of less than 20,000, IIRC), is self-contained and the story can be read perfectly well standalone, and was nominated for the Icelandic Literature Prize. Also, The Seventh Child (also a Glass Key + 3 other awards) & The Man in the Lighthouse from prize-winning Danish author Erik Valeur (Wikipedia DK), two standalones. T7C is more of a psychological suspense about identity, which I read at the same time as SOTW, and IMHO, was nicely atmospheric about that, but the mystery/whodunnit portions were only so-so and overly drawn out for my taste. That said, overall the writing was strong enough that I'm more than willing to give Valeur's other books a try while on sale. YMMV. A bunch of other AmazonCrossing mysteries and literary/other-genre fiction is also on sale at the $0.99 and up mark: linkage for the lot, sorted by price. Notable mystery/thriller authors with works on sale at $1.99 and below include Polish author Zygmunt Miłoszewski (SYKM, Wikipedia; High Caliber Prize for Best Polish Crime Novel), Danish author Jesper Bugge Kold (Wikipedia DK; nominated for a BogForums Debutantpris for newer authors), French author Amélie Antoine (prize-winner of some sort, according to her bio-blurb), Spanish author Antonio Garrido (Wikipedia ES, Pris des Lecteurs Sélection + 3 nominations for the title offered), German author Thomas Meinecke (Wikipedia DE), Swedish author Caroline Eriksson (Wikipedia SV), plus a bunch of other novels by less-established writers (who seem to be mainly translations from bestselling self-published KDP works in other countries). Open Road/Early Bird has a short-lived sale on horror/thrillers today, in honor of Halloween tomorrow. I'm not up on thrillers/horror, and too many titles to list, but if you want to take a look, here is a link to the Open Road site, which then has onward links to various sellers for any books you might want.
